Holden close to Isle ohT
JUST over a minute sep arated John Holden from^
■ achieving his TT racing dream. The 51ryear-old was
battling in the Sure Mobile Sidecar races at ' this year’s Isle of Man TT Championships. . But he came up agonis ingly short, taking a sec-
, ond and a third place to . achieve the silver medal overall. Originally : from

took top spot overall in a . combined t im e ' of 1:58:57-56, with Holden , and Winkle coming home in 2:00:01-57. • Holden said: “To finish a TT.race is an achieve
ment in itself, but I can’t help feeling disappointed we didn’t win it. • : -v : “We were only one mile
an. hour slower overall on average, so I’m a bit fed up in that respect; ■ ■ “But when you look
back on i t and realise what you’ve achieved it’s a great feeling to be o n ; the podium again.’’: ■ Holden, who now lives in Garstang, took second
- spot in the opening race, on his LCR Suzuki 600cc bike in a time of 59:42-24, just under 20 seconds
behind Crowe and Cox., ■ However, ; th a t was
despite leading for the first half of the three-lap. race, as they went on to secure the bragging rights as the fastest men on the circuit,'recording 146.8 mph through the Sulby speed trap on the final lap of the 37.73-mile course. And four days later,
they completed the sec ond race in 1:00:19-33, with their third spot enough to take second
. place overall. And Holden added:
: “The guy who finished ' first lives on the Isle of Man‘ and drives the, course almost every day. “’The ;TT races are
something that everyone, wants to excel in, becaiuse' they are renowned all over the world. ' “But we will come back '
next year and have anoth er crack at it, and hope fully go one better.” . . As well ^ the TT races,
Holden and Winkle are the
reigning.European Sidecar champions, and are currently leading the British Sidecar ChampU- onships, ahead of the next round at Snetterton on the weekend of June 21st. and 22nd. And the latter is a
series they, will look to winthis. timearound, after being pushed into second place in the final' race of last season due to a mechanical failure.
