HEAVY shm/ers failed to deter generous Ribble Valley residents v/ho turned out in force to raise money for a deserving
cau.se. A coffee morning v/as held at Lov/er
Clerk Hill, Whalley, in aid of the Retired Police Dogs Benevolent Fund. A v/brking and a retired police dog
were in attendance-much to the delight of those present. The event, which raised £400, was one
of a number of fund-raising efforts held in recent months, which helped to fund the six awards made this year towards veterinary costs for the retired dogs. Due to the
decrea.se in the number of
serving dogs and its future effect on requirements, the fund has been opened
to those who might require assistance,,; v/hether police officers or members of the public, who take on a retired police dog. • Mrs Sheila Maw, chairman of the

fund-raising committee, was pleased with the turnout at the coffee morning, ■ which was held at her house. She said:: “We will not be producing Christmas cards this year (although we still have .some from last year). We will have a cal endar of photos showing local police dogs
. in Jiction, which should be available from next month.” Our picture shows police dogs Stanley
and .Jess with Rona Westwell, Hazel Lanstell, Mrs Maw,. Jane Atkinson, Brian Yates, PC Gareth Dixon and Bar bara Ashworth. (A210608/2)

; after being told their new sports wall is on its way! ■ A series of successful fund-raising events were organised by the Friends of Whalley Primary School (FOWPS) throughout the past year and raised a magnificent £10,000. ,
-The.cash has been handed over to
the school and will be used to buy a sports wall for pupils to practise a range of ball skills. The money will
;also be spent for the school’s IT department.
.
■ ‘ Headteacher Mr Brian Beresford said: “The multi-sports wall will be situated in the large playground and is excellent as children will be able to
■ practise football goals, netball rings,
• cricket mcket and targets. “I feel that once again the parents
and friends of the school have worked hard to fund something worthwhile for the children who will love the wall for many years to come.” Mrs Beverley Roberts, chairman of
(FOWPS) said: “We feel very proud of our achievements over the past 12 months and we would like to thank all the children, parents, staff and, of course, friends of the committee, who helped to raise this tremendous amount. “Our fund-raising events included a
family bingo night, a sponsored foot ball dribble, paper collections and the annual ball.”
