Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) 4 Clilheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, July 19th, 2007 www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Children’s show is a kind of magic by Glen Pate “

WHILE tlie Ben Elton and Queen production of “We Will Rock You” continued its smash- hit success in the West End, the children of Whalley CE School were pounding out their own ver

sion. This was a world apart - a tiny

stage, a huge sedentary chorus and an auditorium not really helpful to the deeper effects of the music. But in its way it was a masterpiece, with the standing ovation at the end much deserved. The big, big factor in the perform

ance was the sheer enthusiasm of the children. They knew they had a story to tell and a mcssiige to give - and they ju.sldidit. There was no “stageyness”, no overt

stagecraft to maniinilate the audience. 'I'he whole piece was just bolted across wilb a sincerity that no-one can take - and there's a lesson for many! 1 saw the school's production of a

King Arthur musical last year and w:is astonished by the pi'ocision of the cho rus attack, with every start absolute ly unanimous and the dynamics deliv ered unfalteringly. There was no difference this time

around. The production smacked of brilliant teamwork by children and staff, but every show must have its stars. The leading roles were taken by

Lewis Barlow, ,Iosoph .Sutcliffe, James Barnes, Hope Crichton, Kelly Mashiter, Sam Girven and Molly

Durkin with the assurance of seasoned performers. Mums and dads were obviously in tune with Queen hits like “We will rock

you”, “I want to break tree”, “Another one bites the dust” and, of course, “Bohemian Rhapsody”. But they obviously struck more than

just a chord with the children as well and that’s amazing considering that they would not have been born when Mercury, May and Co. were at the

height of their international powers. O The school was given special per

mission to perform the score by www.wewillrockvouschools.com.

www.clifheroeadvertiser.co.uk Holidaymakers’ lucky by Faiza Afzaal

HOLIDAYMAKERS from Scotland had a lucky escape when their coach burst into flames on a busy Clitheroe street. Mr Jack Balfour, the driver

of the single-decker coach, spot ted smoke billowing from the rear of his vehicle while he drove along Station Road. The quick-thinking driver

immediately stopped the coach and got his 25 passenger quick ly, but calmly to safety, then alerted the emergency services. The incident happened

around 1-30 p.m. last 'Wednes day. Emergency services were at the scene minutes later, but by this time the bus was engulfed in flames. Shaken by the incident, Mr

Balfour, who has been a driver for Perth-based Pegasus Travel for five years, said: “I just saw some white smoke rising from the engine compartment and asked all the passengers to evac uate the vehicle. “The next thing I saw was

the bus bursting in flames. I’m glad that all the passengers got

off safely though. We are now waiting for another coach to come and collect us.” Local bus driver Mr Michael

Hall also stopped to help. He said: “I was driving my bus in the opposite direction when I noticed smoke from the engine of the coach. I immediately pulled over, got as close to the burning coach as I could and tried to extinguish the blaze

RHS fingers crossed for fine weather!

■WITH the Royal Lancashire Show off, organisers of the Royal Horticultural Society Show at Tatton Park are keeping fingers crossed for a fine weekend. Holden Clough Nursery proprietor Peter Foley con

tacted the Advertiser and Times on Monday to say that he would again be exhibiting, but that he and his team were in the middle of staging the show in the worst con ditions ever. “Heavy rain and mud have made access very difficult, but the RHS is coping well with copious amounts of bark and, with a better forecast for Tuesday onwards with fine dry weather for the show it should once again be a success”. Ribble Valley vis

itors can find Hold en Clough on stand FM61 in the RHS Floral Marquee. The nursery has

totally redesigned i ts stand for this year’s show, with a sunken brick-lined gravel path through its centre and plant ed flower beds either side. On Sunday, Hold

en Clough took part in filming for a new documentary to be j shown next year on ‘

with a small fire extinguisher that I had, but the flames were too high.” It is understood the tourists,

from the Edinburgh, Glasgow and Hamilton areas, were stay ing for the week at St Annes-on- Sea and enjoying a day trip to Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley when the incident happened. A police spokesman at the scene praised Mr Balfour for
