WHALLEY th ra sh ed Padiham by 101 runs to reach th e Ram sb o ttom Cup semi-finals at Station Road on Sunday. In one of three quarter
final fixtures th a t have taken an age to be played due to the wet weather, Whalley managed to dodge the rain, and they compre hensively out played their high-flying opponents. The locals had first knock,
and an opening stand of 84 from Sri Lankan Bradman Ediriweera and Martin Davies laid the foundations. The professional was first
to fall, caught off Naveed Ashraf for a blistering 56 off 54 balls, which included four fours and three sixes. Skipper Davies followed
at 93 for 25, run out by Anthony Hall, b ut Lee Kearsley anchored the innings with 41, while there were contributions from Neil Cordingley (15), John Rain (9), Richard Palmer (11) and Stephen Booth (10 not out) as Whalley set a com manding tally of 192-8. Professional Kashif Sid-
dique took 4-26, but the pro lific batsman failed by his standards as Whalley eased home. Padiham's batting was
found wanting as three wick ets apiece were taken by Cordingley (3-28), David O'Neill (3-13) and Declan Fitzhenry (3-19), with Ediriweera rounding things off as the visitors were dis missed for just 91. The previous day, howev
er, Whalley obviously had all eyes on their cup tie as they lost by five wickets at home to Earby in the league. Davies and Ediriweera
were both back in the hut at 32, although an undefeated 79 from Cordingley bol stered the score, with other double figure efforts from Kearsley (20), Alex Whelan (13) and Palmer (13 not out) as Whalley closed on 151-5. Earby's Chris Walton was
the pick of the bowlers with 3-42. In reply, the visitors got
off to a similarly slow start before Ali Azmat (79) enjoyed a 94-run partner ship with Nigel Hodge (40). This took the side from
32-2 to 126-3, when Azmat was trapped leg before by O'Neill. Hodge followed a t 138,
and Sam Munns departed for a duck, but Walton (18 not out) and Stephen Pick les (four not out) added the winning runs. On Saturday, Whalley are
away to local rivals Ribbles dale Wanderers, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m. • READ stunned Clitheroe in a 156-run victory at Chat- burn Road. Whalley Road captain

Will Driver impressed in both departments, as, after winning the toss, he hit 86, before picking up the ball to claim 3-13. However, despite scoring
more runs than Clitheroe managed as a team, he did n't do it on his own, as a half century from Chris Holt (53) and 42 from Thomas Odoyo heaved the side to 241-8, with Mark Harg reaves taking 4-54, and Josh Marquet 3-71. In the reply, wickets were
also taken by Frank Barden (3-12) and Odoyo (2-18) as the Chatburn Road hosts were all out for 85. Read had Clitheroe at 6-2
after just four overs, and at 84-5 it was game over as the other half of the order fell for just one further run, four of which went for a duck. Peter Dibb (33) and Jack
Dewhurst (24) top-scored for the champions. On Saturday, Read are at
home to Blackburn North ern, with Clitheroe at Cher ry Tree. • RIBBLESDALE Wan derers came unstuck against title-chasers Blackburn Northern as runs and wick ets didn't come easy. Middle-order batsman
Ryan Gladwin top-scored for the Church Meadow side with 28 runs, following the efforts of David Howard (24), and openers Alistair Marsh (19) and professional JoeScuderi (19). The severity of the lack of
runs and the rest of the order being blitzed was largely down to the bowling of Abdul Bisoodwal, who took 4-10 off just 2.3 overs. Team that with 2-38 from
Farooq Butt and 2-29 from Blackburn Northern profes sional Devendrasingh Bun- dela, and Ribblesdale were in trouble. Three non-scoring efforts
and 10 wickets later, and Ribblesdale were all out for 117. In reply, the home side
didn't get off to a good start as Howard and Scuderi both managed a wicket apiece with very little on the board. Opener Assif Bhojani was
caught by Robert Lloyd for a duck off Howard, and Scuderi claimed Bisoodwal for just four runs thanks to a catch from Ryan Gladwin. Unfortunately, profession
al Bundela and Naeem Ashraf were immovable, and finished unbeaten with respective tallies of 65 and 54 runs to get home with eight wickets to spare off less than 21 overs.

says thanks ENGLAND and Lancashire seam bowler Sajid Mah mood dropped in on a Clitheroe Cobras' coaching session on Thursday to thank the junior players for their support of Lancashire County Cricket Club. The Bolton-born player,
who is close to returning to county action from a hernia operation, visited each age group while they were prac ticing, offering tips and advice to the boys and girls, before signing autographs and handing out cricket books to the youngsters. He then presented Cobras
chairman Farouk Hussain with a framed Lancashire Lightning shirt, and in turn Farouk formerly signed him on as a Clitheroe Cobra by presenting him with his own named shirt. Mahmood's appearance
Trio lead way to Rimington ease Chatburn win to victory
THANKS to David Price, Neil Cartledge and Andrew Booth, Chatburn recorded a 21-run victory at home to Ingrow. All three players struck up a rapport with
the bat in the first innings, Price leading the way with his knock of 44, and both Car tledge and Booth following suit with 36 runs apiece as the local villagers posted 173-8. However, Booth was not satisfied with
this alone, and progressed to remove half of the Ingrow order with his figures of 5-42. I t was Steve Bowker who took danger
man Parker though, having seen the opener make 97 for the Yorkshire side, and he fol lowed this up with two more down the order to finish with the impressive figures of 3-6 off 2.4 overs. The other two wickets were supplied by
Rod Booth (1-40) and Price (1-31) as Ingrow were all out for 152. The result leaves Chatburn handily
placed in the Second Division of the Mewies Solicitors Craven Cricket League.
FOLLOWING a complete washout the pre vious week, a full programme ensued in the Clitheroe and District Midweek League. Rimington completed a comfortable win
against St James' after scoring 158-9. The church side were restricted to 104 in reply. Chipping A continued their unbeaten run
with a win over fellow village side Chipping Ramblers by scoring 138-4. The league leaders then rushed through
their opponents, bowling them out for 57. Low Moor also recorded a victory over
Calderstones. Martin Peel and Marc Holmes both scored 30 in the total of 118-2. Calderstones made a brave effort in reply,
with Dave Seedall and Keith Gill scoring 28, before running out of overs at 77-6. However, Waggon and Horses maintain
pressure on Chipping A with victory over Sabden at Roefield. The Pendle Hill men pushed hard and reached 66 all out. In reply, Gary Salmon maintained his
recent good form with another 31 not out as Waggon eased to 67-2.
B IT takes a lot to stop Clitheroe Dol phins, and no threat of July rain could deter them at the weekend. Over 25 members enjoyed a fun two-
hour session at Clitheroe Canoe Club. The swimmers, aged between eight
and 16-years-old, plus parents, braved the unseasonable temperatures and the odd shower to learn new skills. Everyone got involved in canoe-
based activities, such as water polo and scarecrow tig, and the morning was rounded off with hot food and drinks. Thanks go to the canoe club coaches for their help with this event. Members of the Clitheroe club are pictured taking to the water, (s)
at Chatburn Road is part of an initiative to promote Lancashire's CashBack scheme, which is aimed at encouraging more young sters to watch live cricket, while raising funds for local clubs, schools and organisa tions. Mahmood is pictured at Chatburn Road. (T150707/9)
• CLITHEROE Cobras Under 15s had a comfortable win at home to Whalley in a Twenty20 game. The Cobras elected to bat
first, and got off to a good s ta r t, despite some good accurate bowling. Dewhurst had to retire on
31 in the seventh over, before Robinson joined Le Breton and scored a quick eight before trying to hit one too many. Stinson went for a suicidal
run and was dismissed with out scoring, but Le Breton and McKenna kept the innings going until the for mer fell for 16. Geelan made a quick
seven, before McKenna fell for 19. Bowness (7) and Walsh (3) scurried and scampered, and the team fin ished on 95-7. In reply, Whalley strug
gled against the pace and accuracy of Dewhurst and Stinson, with Dewhurst tak ing an early wicket. Whalley then began to
take control until the intro duction of Alex Kilkenny. He had a remarkable spell
of off spin bowling, taking 4- 6 off three overs. There were wickets also
for Geelan, Lavery and two for Ruddock. The Cobras ran out win
ners by 31 runs to secure their second victory of the season.
Volleyball teams need new members
PIRATES, Eagles and Pumas have been seen all over the county - don't be alarmed though, these are just the names of volleyball teams getting ready to start the new season of the Lan cashire Volleyball League. As the 2007-08 season approaches, teams from all
over the county are getting ready again for the weekly battles against each other. Maybe your thoughts of
the sport are bikinis, beach es and balls, and you would be half right, b ut in the autumn and winter months, the sport moves indoors at venues across Lancashire.
Teams are crying out for
new players, from beginners to experts, and there is prob ably a club near you if you fancy giving it a go. I t’s a great way to get fit,
and improves balance. I t’s a game for young and
old, men and women, one of the few sports played mixed,
and the tall and short. Training will be starting
soon, and the league is look ing for new players and new teams. For more information,

emphatic victory
CLITHEROE Tennis Club's A team played Crow Wood B in a return fixture on Saturday and the result proved the same as it did in April with an emphatic 4-0 win. Derek Parrott and Phil
Mlleham again took up res idence as top pairing and found little to bother them against the Crow Wood number l ’s. A 6-2 f irst set was fol
lowed by an easy second set but some sloppy finishing meant they squandered 12 match points before closing out 6-4. Steve Pym was joined
once again by sports-mad student Daniel Bush who was in solid aggressive form all day. Their opening match started competitive ly b ut an early break removed their opponents resolve and they cruised to a 6-1,6-0 score. The return rubbers were
also one sided affairs - Par ro t t and Mileham kept their composure a t 3-2 down in the first set and turned on the power to win 6-3, 6-1, while Pym and Bush saw off an early scare trailing 4-5 in the first but winning th a t la s t nine games for a 7-5,6-0 victory. This result means
Clitheroe stay six points behind leaders Burnley A, but having knocked their title rivals out of the cup, silverware is still there for the taking.
Whalley suffer narrow defeat
WHALLEY Tennis Club B were forced to play between the showers in Saturday’s home match with improv ing Accrington. Paul Jenkins and Martin
Haworth continued their impressive run of form by securing a comfortable two- set victory against the vis iting number two pair, but found things harder against the leading Accrington players. They did, however, raise
their game to secure the deciding set, having dropped the opener to win in three closely-fought sets. Whalley's number two pair ing of Peter Heys and Andrew Cuyes were ju s t edged out in their two matches, with one break of serve being decisive in each of the sets. I t fginished two-all in
rubbers, but Accrington gained the extra point due to having won one more set than Whalley, which leaves the locals in the middle of the Second Division.
