Deep sea snaps delight members
PHOTOGRAPHER July England provid ed a spectacular lecture to Ribblesdale Cam era Club, with an account of her venture into underwater photography at the age of 55 and her eventual competition success with photographs from her dives all over the world. The colours of fish in the Red Sea and off
Bali were amazing and begged the question as to why they were so brightly coloured when, without flash, the colours are invisi ble? Her lecture went on to talk about the

technicalities of diving and she sought a volunteer from the audience to try the equipment on. Club secretary Ken Geddes was the only person who admitted “dab bling” with scuba diving and was pressed to act as guinea pig! He is pictured, by fellow member Stewart Clark, modelling the div ing gear for the speaker. • The club’s first competition of the win
ter was the first of a new format that allows entrants to enter a total of four images in the competition. These may be split among the three classes of prints, slides and digital projections, in any distribution. Graham Dudley entered all of his four images as prints and achieved outstanding success by scooping the four top places in this class. Last week the Lancashire and Cheshire’s 2007 slide folio was shown. Next week, member Jeff Cowling presents
“Slides from the Skeleton Coast”. This will be at 7-30 p.m. on the Tuesday (October 18th) at West Bradford Village Hall, where visitors and prospective new members are always welcome. Information about the club can be
obtained from its chairman, John Bradley, on 01254 822921 or secretary, Ken Geddes, on 01200 423474.
Young Farmers make wishes come true
WISHES can come true and Bolton-by-Bowland Young Farm ers are helping to make sure they do
Club memberspresented Karen
Rainford, representing the Make A Wish Foundation, with a cheque for £1,000 at their weekly meeting. The foundation makes magical
wishes come true for young people aged three to 17 who have to live with life-threatening illnesses. “Make A Wish” has no cures to offer and all too often some of the
endings are sad, but, during des perate times when there seems to be no hope, Make A Wish steps in.
As the Young Farmers’ Club is
made up of young people, the members thought it would be appropriate to give a donation to enable someone’s wish to come true. Chairman of Bolton-by-Bow-
land YFC, Adam Thornber, said “The talk we were given on ‘Make A Wish’ was very informative and had a deep impact on the mem
bers and we all hope tha t the club’s donation will help make someone’s wish come true.” The club raised the money by
holding various social events, including the Christmas Cracker with a D J, entertainment and a well-stocked bar! Past chairman Mark Dobson thanked everyone for all their help and support in raising the money. Our picture shows Karen Rain-
ford receiving the £1,000 cheque from the Bolton-by-Bowland Young Farmers, (s)

STARRING Catherine T a te and Iain Glenn, Mrs Ratcliffe’s Revolu tion is based on the true story of Frank Ratcliffe, a Marxist from the north of England who drags his family with him to live in East Berlin in the mid- 1960s. Once there, they soon realise th a t life in the communist bloc is not the socialist idyll Frank had imagined. His wife of 17 years, Dorothy, is thrown by life behind the Iron Curtain, but battles to keep the fami ly together. Will Mr Rat
cliffe finally throw away his party card and fall in love with his brave new wife?
chosen by Booth’s wine buyer Sally Holloway (pic tured) to suit all budgets, with bottles ranging in price from £4.79 to £23.99. Some of the wines that
will be featured are not usually available in super markets, such as the Extreme Rioja Marques de la Concordia 2003 (£12.99), which is exclu sive to Booths. This ticketed event is
being held as p ar t of Booth’s new two-week Wine Fair, which takes place throughout its stores until Sunday. Tickets can be obtained in person from the Clitheroe store or by calling 01200 427325. Tickets are limited and are available on a first-come- first-served basis. Those attending the
tastings will benefit from various special offers and also the chance to win a two-night break to Bor deaux for two people, including a tour around the region’s vineyards. Sally Holloway said: “As
well as showcasing our existing range of wines we wanted to offer Clitheroe Booths customers some thing a bit different, with a focus on unusual grape varieties and styles, the classics and wines that are not usually available in supermarkets.”
