Roadside eye tests for drivers
o f
PO L IC E teamed up w ith a Clitheroe opticians to offer free eye tests to motorists. Staff from S.W. Allen opticians,
in Market Place, helped officers to carry out the tests in Sainsbury’s car park as part of a new police campaign to encourage safer driv ing.
Sgt Stuart Isherwood, from the
Road Policing Unit at Accrington, Lancashire Constabulary, said: “Drivers must be able to read a number plate at a minimum dis tance of 20.5 metres in good day
light under the Road Traffic Act. “Drivers have their eyesight
checked when they pass their driv ing test and there is no further requirement for a test until they reach 70 years old. The dangers of driving with uncorrected eyesight are obvious and yet this is an area th a t is often neglected by the motoring public. “We will not be prosecuting
anybody who fails the voluntary eye test today, but will obviously encourage those who do fail the test to visit an optician and invest
in some appropriate glasses or con tact lenses as soon as possible.”. Brett Millard, operations direc
tor for S.W. Allen opticians, said: “We consider road safety an extremely high priority, which is why we are happy to be working with Lancashire Constabulary in this campaign.” Our picture shows Mrs Mary
Eglin, one of the many shoppers to take advantage of the free eye test, with Brett Millard, of S.W. Allen opticians and PC Gary Makin. (A130906/11)
Died during surgery
AN 81-year-old Ribble Valley woman who suffered a perforation of the colon during a routine colonscophy died after surgery to correct the prob lem. An inquest heard th a t Doris
Buxbaum appeared to be recovering well from the surgery, but there was a sudden deterioration and she died before her family arrived at hospital. However, a post-mortem examina
tion revealed that Mrs Buxbaum had severe heart problems, which were the cause of her death. Mrs Buxbaum, of Eastfield Drive,
West Bradford, underwent surgery to remove the perforated section on June 6th and Dr Lyndon Jones said the operation was uneventful. She was taken to the intensive care
unit, where her recovery was described as dramatic. She was moved to the high dependency u nit and eventually transferred to a normal ward. Her husband, Mr Axel Buxbaum,
said his wife had been waiting for the final transfer and had told him to go home. Early the following morning he received a call from the hospital, but by the time he arrived she was dead. “It was an enormous shock,” said
Mr Buxbaum. Dr Jones said the incidence of per
foration of the colon during a colon scophy was one in 1,000. A post-mortem examination
showed Mrs Buxbaum's heart was enlarged and there was some scarring which showed blood supply had not been optimum. Some arteries were blocked by as much as 90 %. The medical cause of death was
given as heart failure due to harden ing and narrowing of the arteries, with the operation contributing to, but not causing death. Deputy coroner Carolyn Singleton
recorded a narrative verdict - a short, factual statement setting out the cir cumstances of Mrs Buxbaum's death.
