A NEW season of Ciitheroe Speakers’ Club meetings is under way. Fifteen members and

four new guests met at Whalley Abbey for a taster session on how the club works. In the abbey’s magnifi

cent surroundings, all were entertained by two

manual speeches - given as an example of what is expected of newcomers - and a variety of off-the-

' cuff speeches on humour. The next meeting will

be at Whalley Abbey on Monday at 7-30 p.m. Anyone interested in join ing the group is more than welcome to attend.

troubled history and a doubtful future, it’s a ques tion that isn't so easy to answer, but for Tracy Heart, it's a question she can no longer ignore. After four years of treading water and redeeming her self in the eyes of her single mother, she has set herself

the humble goal of owning her own business. But the unexpected

return of her ex-boyfriend, Jonny, the criminal aspira tions of her brother, Ray, and the emotional draw of troubled family friend and ex-football star Lionel Dawson creates friction for Tracy. Cate Blanchett, Hugo

THE first play of the new season by Blackburn Drama Club is about four out-of-condition business men sent off on a team building exercise in the Lake District. They then manage to

succeed in being the first people ever to get ship wrecked on an island on Derwent Water. Bound in by fog, men

aced by wildlife and cut off from the world, this perfunctory middle-class exercise turns into a car nival of recrimination, French cricket and sausages. What should have been

a bonding process for four men turns into a muddy, bloody fight for survival. “Neville’s Island”, by

Tim Firth, is being per- fomed at the Thwaites Empire Theatre from Wednesday, October 11th, until Saturday, the 14th, nightly at 7-30 p.m. Tickets cost £7 and are

available from the box office on 01254 680137.
