from Clitheroe. Mr Murray, who lives in Chatburn, said two cars were involved, both heading towards Chatburn at

speed. The first car appeared to go out of con

trol on the bend at Rydal Place, hitting a wall before flipping on to its roof and set ting alight.

The second car then crashed into the

first. A spokesman for the Road Policing

Unit at Accrington confirmed that two cars were involved in the accident, and that the five occupants were lucky to escape unhurt. The road was closed for more than two hours to clear up.

LAUGHTER was definitely on the agenda I when one of the most popular stars in the comedy world attended a charity golf | match in aid of two worthwhile causes. The annual event saw Irish comedy leg-1

end Frank Carson teeing off in style at Mytton Fold Hotel and Golf Complex in | Langho. The event, which raised £1,500, coincided I

with the launch of the facility’s new buggy path. As well as the match, other attrac tions dimng the fun-packed day included a four-course meal and an auction. Mrs Irene Robinson, fimctions co-ordna- ]

tor at the popular hotel said the event was a huge success and everyone had a barrel of laughs. She added: “We are pleased with the

amount raised, which will help to boost funds for the East Lancashire Hospice and | St Clare’s Hospice, based in Newcastle. “The charity match was also held in I

memory of Frank Hargreaves, the owner of Mytton Fold Hotel, who died earlier this year. It was initially his idea to invite Frank Carson.’’ Our picture shows stand-up comedian

Wildlife Trust and the work we are doing in the Clitheroe area,” Phil explained. “The reserves are great places to see wildflovrers, butterflies and birds, and Salthill is internationally important for its geology as the rocks there contain manyfosals.” Apart from his key aim of man^ng

the two nature reserves, Phil wants to encourage more people to take advan- t ^ of the sites and enjoy exploring. He also plans to organise events and

guided walks to help people gain a bet ter understanding of what they sea Phil is already well on his way to

enhancing the structure of the reserves with the erection of new agns, footpath upgrades and regular litter clearanca Volunteer work parties are another

idea he hopes will encourage more peo ple to become involved with the reserves. Through these, people can help to maintain the reserves, by, for exam ple, cutting back trees and scrub or clearing paths. “Just as important, this is a way for

local people to get out into the open air to enjoy themselves, meet other people and learn some new skills,” Phil explained. “We want to get as many

A thank-you for the gift of life

A FORMER Ribhle Valley Mayor, Coun. Charles Warkman, has presented a framed photograph he received to Ribble Valley

Borough Council. Coun. Warkman was given the picture

from Water Aid for his fund-raising efforts for the charity during its quarter cente

nary year. He received the picture at a presenta

tion at the Midland Hotel in Manchester

r©c6ntly» Through his efforts, more than £3,000

was raised throughout the Ribble Valley for the charity. He said that he believed it was a better way of getting aid to people than throwing cash a t their country because Water Aid’s fundamental aim is to improve the lives of people through the basic provision of water. He said: “I am very surprised and cer

tainly wasn’t expecting it. They sent us a report of how things are going and some of the reports came from the people they are

helping. “This is a tribute, not to me, but to the

people of the Ribhle Valley and I hope that someone will continue the haM work and support this worthwhile cause.” Our picture shows Coun. Warkman
