T h e final lin k with borough

force d ies by Jean Miller

THE last sergeant in the old Clitheroe | Borough Police force, George Sutcliffe, has died at his home in Poynton, Cheshire, at the age of 92. Many men in the Clitheroe area, who are I

now retired, will smile as they recall being told off by Sgt Sutcliffe for playing football | in the street and other misdemeanours. Word was passed round “Look out. Sergeant Sutcliffe’s coming”. Mr Sutcliffe left Clitheroe to join the I

Lancashire force in the early 1950s, being stationed first at Kearsley, and later rising j to the rank of chief inspector. Mr Sutcliffe and his wife, Madge, pic

tured above, who died 18 months ago, enjoyed sequence dancing and caravanning j with friends. They still maintained contact with j

friends and acquaintances in the Clitheroe | area, partly through Masonic Lodge 401, Waddington. In Poynton they attended the Baptist |

Church, where a service -will be held tomor row at 11-15 a.m. prior to burial. Donations are requested for YOU I

(Young Oncology Unit) at the Christie | Hospital in memory of the Sutcliffes’ eld est grandson, who died of leukaemia at the I age of 15. The couple are survived by three | daughters, Jennifer, Gillian and Georgie, eight grandchildren and six great-grand-1 children, (s)

DESPITE a poor weather forecast, 13 I Clitheroe Ramblers gathered on Boss | Moor for their walk. Boss Moor is north of Hetton between j

as the group walked up the attractive val ley past Bordley Hall to Bordley Town, an erstwhile sheep farming settlement and the “capital of Malham Moor” being a grange of Fountains Abbey. It now has only two habitations, a farm and a house. Lunch was taken here before passing |

indications of Anglian settlements and enclosures on the way to Mastiles Lane, which was followed a short distance before joining Malham Moor Lane. Bordley Cir cle was •visited nearby. The rain came as members were crossing |

Threshfield and Boss Moors returning to the start, being unable, due to the weath er, to find the ruins of Waste Inn. The walk was led by J o h n Whitehead.
