Clitheroe........................1 Bamber Bridge.... ......2 NEW Clitheroe boss Neil Reynolds didn't get the ideal first result of his managerial career at Shawbridge on Saturday against his former team Bamber Bridge. In fact he saw the ill-
disciplined side he and fel low manager Peter Smith have inherited pick up fur ther bookings, and battle back from a goal down, only to be reduced to 10 men when James Dean picked up his third red card of the season. Brig netted a winner shortly after as a result,
.and the Blues were left to rue a couple of earlier squandered opportunities by the imposing striker that would have served him as hero rather than villain. It was the reckless tack
les of unpopular former Blue Jeff Underwood that sparked the controversy, though, as after defecting to the Preston side last week, the right-back was intent on leaving his mark on his old team mates, and did so with just a yel low card to his name. It was after such a chal
lenge on substitute Dar rell Avery, that left the midfielder crumpled on the floor, that Dean threw the ball at Underwood while he was on the ground. The referee didn't see it,
but thanks to the lines man the striker was given his marching orders. Earlier, in an otherwise
uneventful first half, Bamber Bridge took the lead shortly after the break when Simon Gamer was pulled out of position at left back and a probing ball was played in behind him. The initial shot from
the wing was saved by Paul Horridge at his near post, but Ryan Salmon was on hand to gobble up the rebound. Clitheroe came into
their own after half-time and both Craig Sargeson
and Dean tested Brig keeper David Newnes. New signing from Barnoldswick Town, Tom Bartlett, made way for Ian Johnson, and Dean had two good opportuni ties to equalise. His first saw him strike
over the bar on the turn from just inside the box, and his second was an air shot - both the kind of efforts the sure-footed striker has taken in his stride in recent weeks. Perhaps unfairly, any
thing that comes off the end of his foot in the box this season is expected-to find the target, such is his goals to games ratio. However, it was left to
another swift Avery strike from all of 25 yards to pull Clitheroe level on the hour. The ball came out to
the central midfielder and he rifled a low shot through a packed area and in off the post. But unlike his winner
against Halesowen last month, it counted for nothing when he was scythed down by his for mer team mate and the Blues, who reside rock bottom of the league's fair play table, were reduced to 10 men. New centre half and
former reserve team play er. Tom Benfield, also rejoining
from
Barnoldswick, then slipped up with a poor back pass, unaware that Salmon was on his shoul der, and the Brig striker was in and around Hor ridge to net the 80th minute winner. The grounding and abil
ity is there for Reynolds and Smith to build upon but the discipline w i l l ' need some work if they intend to maintain a regu lar team line up. Clitheroe: Horridge,
Nay, Garner, Benfield, Anderson, Daniels, Sarge son, Jones, Dean, Bartlett (Johnson), Dempsey (Avery). Not used: Bain. ADRIAN CAPSTICK

Hurst Green are closing in
Willon Park ........... 1 Burst Green ........... 2 HURST Green moved to within two points of East Lancashire League leaders Rimin^on with a 2-1 win at Witton Park. And with games in hand
on both the leaders and second-placed Rock Rovers, they are well placed to strike for the title in the second half of the season. But they did not have
everything their own way against their lowly oppo nents on a bobbly, difficult pitch. Early in the game an
uncharacteristic mistake by central defender Tony ■Coupe opened the door for the home side, but a bril liant, last-ditch tackle by Tom Bamber prevented a certain goal. Hurst Green responded
with chances of their own, and Danny Walker forced a fine save before Graham McEwan twice shot over the crossbar when well placed. McEwan made no mis
take when presented with a third chance as, on the half-hour, he lobbed the
advancing keeper to give the title-chasers the lead. Further chances fell to
Walker and Mark Young before the interval, but there was no change to the scoreline and the opening stages of the second peri od were a fairly even con test. Andy Whaites appeared
to have settled the issue on the hour, scoring with a fine header from a corner. But Witto'n Park had
other ideas and pulled a goal back from a corner 10 minutes later. Shortly after that. Wit-
ton had strong claims for a penalty waved away by the referee, but with 10 minutes to go they were awarded a spot kick which was, fortunately, smashed against the base of the post before rebounding to safety. Hurst Green managed
to see out the remainder of the game from that point and will look to bank another three points when they take on Kelbrook at home on Saturday (2 p.m.).
Rimington Reserves ..7 Goodshaw Reserves . .1 RIMINGTON returned to form with an impressive home display against Goodshaw. Having missed a hatful
of chances in their 4-;3 defeat at Worsthorne last week, the home side soon made amends with a glut of goals. Rimington took the
lead early on when Matt Garner broke down the left to cross perfectly for Gari Haslam, poised on the back post, to convert easily. ' Garner then turned
frqm provider to scorer, doubling the lead after rounding the keeper for an easy tap-in. Goodshaw pulled a goal
back, Andrew Black- ledge's poor clearance only finding a visiting player who unleashed a fierce shot into the top left hand corner. Garner was replaced by
Mark Leach at half-time through injury, and the youngster proved to be a more than able deputy. It was Leach who gave Rimington a deserved
two-goal cushion when he pounced on a loose ball to' scramble past the keeper. The substitute then
added another to the dis may of the. Goodshaw players, who felt their keeper had the ball in both hands when Leach forced it home. Next came a bit of for
tune as Jack Dearden's square ball into the box was missed completely by Haslam, only to rebound into the net off a Good shaw defender. The visitors had to

Clitheroe RUFC......19 UCLAN..................35 A SPIRITED, but again error-strewn, performance against a well-organised, and well-drilled student side saw Clitheroe slip to another disappointing defeat. With the going at Lit-
tlemoor described as soft to heavy, Clitheroe were hoping that the conditions would suit their heavier side. However, the University
side were first to strike, with the visitors’ classy centre going in for his first of the afternoon. At least this got the
Maroons’ pack fired up, and they responded in fine fashion by producing a text book driving maul, ruthlessly resisting the attempts to collapse the melee, to cross from fully 20 metres out. ' There was some conjec
ture over who claimed the score, but it's pistols
■ drawn between prop Mark Curphy and lock Steve Dowson for the try! However UCLAN were
playing well, using their speedy back line to good effect, and just before the interval scored two more tries in quick succession. The second period saw
endure yet more own goal misery when an attempt ed defensive clearance from Danny Anderson's long ball was.mis-hit and lobbed the keeper. The rout was completed ■
by man-of-the-match Gary Brunskill, his shot taking a kind deflection past the keeper. A better performance
from the home side then, who'll need to maintain their standards to beat a Colne side who haven't lost since the first day of the season against Rim ington.

Whalley golfers’ busy
weekend
DESPITE the poor weather, 'Whalley Golf 3
Club members managed to complete all three scheduled competitions. On Thursday, it was the
turn of the ladies to hold their nine-hole Open Turkey Shoot. There was much con
sternation among most of the ladies, when two "flashers" were reported to be on the course. Fortunately, on closer
inspection, it was found that it was, in fact, club members Joan ’Whittaker and Wendy Green wearing flashing Santa hats - the names of those who volun teered rather too eagerly to check this report out more closely have been noted! In the competition
proper, former Lady Cap tain Jean Dearden was in first place with 21 points; Sue Neilson (Bury) with 20 points was second and Whalley member Georgina Powell took third place with 19 points. Saturday saw the latest
in professional Jamie Hunt's Winter Series. ^ Played over 13 holes,
and with only five clubs allowed, Derek Shirtcliffe took pole position with 33 points; Roy Ellis (32) was second and Dave Wetton— showing a welcome return to form - was in third place with 30 points. Another strong per
formance from John Hyde leapfrogged him into joint first place in the Order of Merit with Trevor Thom- ber. Nick Bradley retains^,
third place. On Sunday, members
played in the Club Mixed Turkey Shoot. Again played over nine
holes, the partnership of Steve Shoreman and Joan Whittaker with 25 points emerged as clear winners. A card play-off was
needed to determine sec ond place and this was won by Captain Elect John Slinger and his wife Lorna with 23 points from the quickly-improving Dan Rodgers and Maggie Harvey.
After the golf, members
and their guests were entertained by the Haslingden
and
Helmshore brass band which played a selection of seasonal music and carols. The club is indebted to
Ladies’ Secretary Lorna Slinger for all her hard^ work in organising the day.
