The countdown begins to opening of The Grand

by Vivien Meath

TH E wraps should come off Clitheroe’s new. s ta te-of-the-art youth and community centre in

September 2007. Ground-breaking plans were unveiled

on Monday as Steve Chalke, the founder of the internationally success ful Oasis Trust, visited the York Street site where The Grand, the town’s for mer cinema, is midway through a multi-million pound facelift. The new venue is to be run by Oasis

on behalf of the Lancaster Foundation. The trust will also be taking over man agement of the highly acclaimed Castle skatepark - currently ranked national ly as the third best in the country by the boarders themselves- and one of the town’s most successful projects. A Christian foundation,-Oasis is

already making huge inroads into everyday life throughout Britain and abroad. The trust has turned round empty churches, is currently building three academies, runs health centres and a multitude of buildings to serve the community across the UK and abroad.

When completed. The Grand will house an inspirational youth, music

.

and arts centre, with a cyber cafe, audi torium, recording studios, dance studio, reheard rooms and other facilities. Mr Chalke confirmed that, although spe cialising in media, music and the arts, the intention is to gradually develop a much wider range of educational and health care programmes. There will be a huge accent on the family, with young people at the heart of the building, but ad(htional facilities for parents, grand parents etc. The Grand will be run by David Wil

son, who comes to Clitheroe from Bournemouth and is expected to start work early next year. He will work with the Gold Team, whose members have been working in educational support in local schools for several years. Oasis will be setting up a number of

consultation meetings in spring 2007, to allow local residents to hear more about the developing opportunities, ask ques tions and help guide the future strate gy.

Mr Chalke added: “Oasis’s goal is to

work alongside other service providers and to play a strong role in helping meet the n e ^ of young people and the wider community, whether education al, personal or spiritual.” John and Steven Lancaster said they believed the revamped venue would

bring new opportunities to the area’s young people. “I t ’s about regenera tion,” said Steven. “The transformation of this building into a state-of-the-art venue continues the further provision of new and much needed facilities in Clitheroe. Our aim is to strengthen
