i a i i i w ^ S28040G/2C Ramblers take to the Dales for a Bank Holiday trip out
SEVENTEEN members of the Clitheroe Ram blers enjoyed perfect conditions for their walk on access land over Park Fell and Simon Fell, led by Mary Thorpe. I t was the Saturday of the May Day Bank
Holiday weekend and Horton-in-Ribblesdale was crowded with parked cars. Luckily the walk started from Selside, further up the valley. The ramblers were the only walkers
to be seen on the path up to Colt Park. After a short coffee break, the steep climb up Park Fell began. There were pauses to look across at Pen-y- Ghent to the left, with Whernside and Great Knoutberry to the right and the Ribblehead viaduct far down below. After this chmb, it was mainly level walking to
reach the track along the edge of Simon Fell. There was a dramatic view of Ingleborough all
the way ahead, and to the right Chapel-le-Dale a long way below. A sunny lunch stop was enjoyed in a sheltered hollow on Simon Fell, from where Morecambe Bay and rather hazy Lakeland tells beyond could be seen. Having met only two or three walkers so far,
the group now came upon all those who had come up from Chapel-le-Dale or Horton. They were only a 250ft climb below the summit of Inglebor
ough, so more than half the group decided to gc up to the cairn and back down the same way. The others strolled down towards Horton, and the Ingleborough party soon caught up with them at the old Shooting Hut. After another coffee stop in the sunshine at
Sulber Nick, the group turned left and followed the ancient pack-horse track across pasture lane down to Selside and the end of a superb day!
