Early-release thug in further attack
• c'DnliiuR'tl from .‘i
released on licence in mid- July last year after serving two-and-a-half years behind bars. Then on October 22nd,
just 14 weeks after his release, he launched anoth er vicious attack. He previously pleaded
at Preston Crown Court to the second Offence of grievous bodily harm and appeared for sentencing at Burnley Crown Court on Tuesday this week. The court heard that
Kenyon had set about Mohammed Patel, knee ing him, punching him and headbutting him after smashing his way into the victim's car with a metal road sign. Shortly after his release from prison, Keny on had taken up again with former girlfriend Samantha Hoole and began living with her. But Miss Hoole was also
involved in a relationship with Mr Patel, the court was told. Kenyon knew she had been seeing Mr Patel, but understood it was over. However, he did not
believe her when she said she was visiting her grand mother, so he followed her and saw her getting into Mr Patel's car. Kenyon then set on the
victim, striking him about 15 times to the head and body. Mr Patel, who received a fractured cheek bone and other injuries, went to Blackburn Royal Infirmary, had an opera tion and was facing more surgery later. Mr Francis McEntee
(prosecuting) said after the assault Mr Patel suf fered insomnia, pain in his face and had not been able to work.
Royal memory THE recent picture of youngsters waiting to greet the Queen at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School brought back mem ories for Steven Procter. He said the picture was
his class from school, adding: “Although I didn’t get in the picture because I was tall and had to stand at the back. I can quite easily put names to all the faces. “Thanks to whoever
included it. It put a smile on my face remembering how small we all were. “And I never did get to meet the Queen!”
• THE opening hours of Clitheroe Social Club, in Wellgate, are running as normal again after a change in closing times due to health and safety procedures in the disco room, which is still closed.
Mr Joe Boyd (defend
ing) said on his release Kenyon had been over joyed to find Miss Hoole still had affection for him, but he felt betrayed and lost his temper after becoming aware she was seeing the victim. Sentencing the defen
dant for the latest assault. Judge Edward Slinger told him he had to consider whether there was a signif icant risk of him causing serious harm to the public in the future. The judge said he did
not consider it would be unreasonable to assume there was a risk. He con tinued: “There is quite clearly real concern about your reaction when faced with circumstances of con flict. I am required by law to impose an extended sen tence of imprisonment.” Kenyon, who has
already served the equiva lent of a 12-month jail term since being recalled to prison after the attack last October, was ordered to serve six months of the unexpired period of the previous sentence. In addi tion, he was given a two- year prison term for the new offence and an extend ed licence period of three years. • Konrad Bisping’s
mother, Mrs Kathleen Bisping, of Henthorn Close, Clitheroe, previous ly told the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times she was not surprised Kenyon had struck again. During his trial for the attack on her son, one of Kenyon’s Army officers told her he was “a ticking timebomb waiting to explode”. Mrs Bisping said of
Kenyon: “I don’t know him and I don’t want to know him. He destroyed my son’s life.”
Air rescue
A RIDER who took a tumble from his horse near Grindleton was flown to hospital by the North West Air Ambulance on Sunday. The paramedics were
called in shortly after 1 p.m. due to the remote location and difficult access to reach the 36- year-old male casualty, who was thought to be sii- fering from back injuries. Despite the difficulties, a land ambulance also reached the scene and the two crews worked together to treat the casualty, who was flown to Burnley Gen eral Hospital. The same journey by land would have taken around 40 min utes. The North West Air
Ambulance is a registered charity, receiving no main stream funding. Donations can be made by ringing 0800 5874570.
An exciting concert closes this season
A CONCERT full of verve and exciting contrasts was the last of this season’s book ings for the Clitheroe Concert Society. A trio of young ladies, namely Claire Fillhart
(flute), Sally Richardson (oboe) and Claire Dun ham (piano), began playing together in Man chester in 2001 and soon the group became known as “Intriplicate”. They have been described as “musicians of
considerable integrity” and the packed audience was impressed with their musicality, enthusias tic vitality and obvious joy in performance. Compositions written for this group of instru
ments do not give a prolific choice of music for performance, but the programme given was both interesting and varied. It included “Summer Waltzes” by Paul Har
ris (a group of short lively pieces), a “Sonata in A Minor”, by Georg Telemann (with great rap port between the instrumentalists), the “Trio of the Young Ishmaelites” (a calm and tranquil piece) by Hector Berlioz, “A Pastoral” by Geof frey Robbins and “A Trio for Flute, Oboe and
Piano” by Madeleine Dring. After the interval, there was a “Trio Sonata in G Minor” by Johann Christoph Pepusch, also an interesting descriptive suite by William Grant Still with an American theme, and the concert ended with a “Suite Bourgeoise” by Malcolm Arnold. This last piece was recently rediscovered, hav
ing been lost shortly after it was composed in 1940, and a lively vigorous extravaganza it proved to be. Altogether a happy and enjoyable concert.
E.F. • This year„a short AGM will be held during
the interval of an extra concert to be held at Rib- ble Valley Borough Council Chamber on Wednesday, June 7th, by the outstanding young cellist. Gemma Rosefield. The concert will not be open generally to non
members, but members are welcome to bring guests. The concert will be free, but donations will be welcome. Our picture, by Ken Geddes, shows “Intripli
cate”. (s)
Democracy is working at grass roots level
DEMOCRACY at grass roots level was shown to be working at the first meeting of the Rib- ble Valley Lancashire Local. Lancashire Locals are a Lan
cashire County Council initia tive that empowers locally- elected councillors to make decisions on county services within their areas. The meetings enable district
and county councillors to shape and influence the delivery of local government services The Ribble Valley meeting,
held at Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School Sixth Form Centre, saw county and district council lors, all representing Ribble Valley, decide to implement traffic calming schemes in two areas of the borough. The meeting saw the election of County Councillor Christo
pher Holtom (Ribble Valley South West) as chairman of the Lancashire Local Ribble Valley and borough Coun. Frank Dyson (St Mary’s ward) as vice chairman. The decisions taken concerned overturning the objection to the proposed prohi bition of loading along both sides of the Lincoln Way, Clitheroe, and for the introduc tion of traffic calming measures in Waddington Road, Clitheroe Road and Grindleton Road in West Bradford. Brian Cook, area manager
for highways, gave a verbal report to the meeting on high ways issues in Ribble Valley. He took away a list of highway issues from the councillors pres ent. Issues raised included the need for crossing facilities at Whalley Road, Clitheroe, and
• PARENTS and children are being invited to Pendle Pre-School’s open day. The event is being held on Wednesday,
the need for speed restrictions in Brockhall Village. Other items discussed at the
meeting included the subsidised bus services in Ribble Valley, local grants scheme which will enable each County Councillor to award up to £1,000 in grants to help local community well being and developing a business plan for the Lancashire Local meeting. Lancashire Local meetings
are being held in each of the 12 districts within the county. Members of the Ribble Valley Lancashire Local decided to use various venues throughout the borough for their future meet ings, Including all the market towns. Members agreed to hold their next meeting on May 31st in Longrldge, although the venue is yet to be decided.
between 1 and 2-30 p.m., at the town’s rugby club. Anyone requiring further details is asked to telephone Jacqui Mayman on 07800 647506.
