Elections that give youths

a voice

YOUNG people from across the Ribble Valley have voted for their voice to be

heard in Parliament. More than 3,000 teenagers

cast their vote in the UK Youth Parliament elections, held at the Ribble Valley Bor ough Council Chamber. With 13 candidates from six

secondary schools in the bor- - ough, Rebecca Lindsay, of Longridge High School, was re-elected as the constituency’s MYP with 682 votes. - . The elections, held national ly every two years by the Local Education Authority, aims to give young people between the ages of 11 and 18 some power within local and national gov ernment. The Lancashire County Council Youth and Communi

ty Service is responsible for canvassing candidates through visiting schools and encourag ing pupils to stand as nominees

• •

in the election. Sir Bill Taylor, district team manager of the youth service, highlighted its importance. "We believe very much in

our young people here in the Ribble Valley and what they deserve is a voice here and now, as well as in the future which they represent”, he said. “We take them seriously, as

they are tomorrow's teachers, youth workers, councillors and MP's. They are also the next generation of voters, house holders, parents and employ ees. “They are members of the

community in their own right, who should not be ignored.” Our picture shows Ribble

Valley Borough Council chief executive Mr Dave Morris, Lancashire County Council youth worker Louise Neville, youth MP Becky Lindsay and Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Mary Robinson at the elec tion. (s)
