range in-store, Sally has recommended a selection of wines to tempt any palate and demonstrate that really good wines can be found a t very reason able prices. Christmas Day: I have
chosen two wines for a Christmas lunch or dinner - Cotes du Rhone Blanc Louis Mousset and Rioja Reserva Goto de Imaz. White Rhone tends to be overlooked, but this barrel fermented blend of Grenache Blanc and Viog- nier has delicious aromatic mouth-filling fruit and creamy oak. I t is a really versatile
white, with enough flavour to deal with turkey and all the trimmings. The aged Rioja is
another good all-rounder for the Christmas table, with i ts mellow sweet vanilla flavours working well with both turkey and fuller-flavoured game dish es. (Cotes du Rhone Blanc Louis Mousset is reduced from £6.99 to £4.99, and Rioja Reserva Goto de Imaz from £8.99 to £6.99). New Year’s Eve: Party wines should be fun, crowd

pleasers, not too expensive and easy to open! Booths launched a pair
of Italian wines this year with a trendy Vespa on the label and really character ful wine in the bottle - The Rapido twins. 'The white is a crisp,
zesty Trebbiano d’Abruz- zo and the red, a crunchy, cherry fruited Rosso di Beneventano. Both have a screw cap and retail a t £2.99. Boxing Day buffet:
How about a bright zingy gooseberry flavoured Sauvignon Blanc? Trio Chilean Sauvignon Blanc Concha y Toro would be a perfect palate pick-me-up af ter th e excesses of Christmas Day and would be excellent with cold cuts. A really good red to
match beef and lamb would be Brown Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon - it is an appealing, blackcurrant fruited red with lots of flavour, but is rounded and soft enough to appeal to most palates. (Trio Chilean Sauvi

Recall the flavoif of the '80s with H bward
MORE than 20 years after his first chart hit, a true survivor of the 1980s will be perform ing his greatest hits at
Burnley Mechanics. I t was in 1983 th a t
Howard Jones released his first single “New Song” in the UK. All expectations were exceeded as the single steadily climbed the charts to peak at number three. His success continued to
grow and the hits came thick and fast, including “What is Love”, “Pearl in th e Shell”, “Hide and Seek”, “Like to Get To Know You Well” and many more. His album sales world
wide are now in excess of eight million and he is one of the very few British artists to have comprehen sively broken America in the past 25 years, when his single “No One Is To Blame” went to number one in the US. Apart from being a
singer and songwriter, Howard is also a great
piano player and will be appearing in acoustic mode on piano and vocals at the Mechanics, accom panied by highly respected guitarist Robin Boult. A 20th Anniversary
DVD was released in March 2005 has had superb reviews and his new studio album “Revolution of the Heart” received its worldwide release in Sep tember. Howard also appeared
on ITV’s “Hit Me Baby One More Time” in the UK in April, which was his biggest UK TV appear ance for 15 years. He also appeared on the US ver sion of “Hit Me Baby One More Time” which aired in 2005 across the US and Canada, and where Howard was voted number one on the show. Howard Jones will be
appearing at the Burnley Mechanics on Saturday, December 17th at 8 p.m. Tickets are £12 with dis counts at £10. For tickets call the box office on 01282 664400.

LUSCIOUS LEMCN CAKE
with Jeremy Williams of No. 51, Coffee Shop, Whalley.
OLD E-WORLD E is not really the word, its more a cosy, warm atmosphere which greets th e cus tomers who enter No. 51 coffee shop in the centre of Whalley. ■ I say olde-worlde
because the interior is full of exquisite traditional objet d’arts from pictures to ornaments, candles and pottery as well as sweets in jars which remind one of childhood surprises, pear drops, humbugs, mint imperials and aniseed balls, and high q u a l ity chocolates for every occasion. P ro p r ieto r Jeremy
Williams, took over the coffee shop eight months ago, and has gradually introduced a decor of his own, much different from the previous doll’s house theme. He has a wealth of experience having worked a t the Spread Eagle, Saw- ley, for 22 years and ran th e Duke of York, Grindleton, together with his wife, Katherine, for 14 years. At No 51 he has intro
