Duo’s Christmas Day protest plan

Funeral Directors

TWO men from Haltwhistle in Northumberland are preparing to spend Christmas Day in Dunsop Bridge, which much to their annoyance, has been officially registered the “Centre of Britain” . Electrical shop owner Richard Sheet and former

Haltwhistle town councillor Maurice Eden Irving have for over a decade believed that the geographic location of their South Tynedale town lies at the pivotal point of the nation. In fact, the popular tourist destination, has long been

marketed by its residents as being the “ Centre of Britain” . So, just imagine their shock back in October, when

Harrods’ owner Mohammed al Fayed declared a loca tion near Dunsop Bridge as the official position. To show their disdain, the duo have decided to visit

Dunsop Bridge in Mr Sheet’s van, which displays the words “Centre of Britain Electrix” , on Christmas Day. They want to see this famous landmark for themselves and chat to locals, who they hope will be intrigued by the van’s sign. The matter was first brought to the men’s attention

when Harrods ran its “Truly British” promotion offer ing a year’s lease of the one square metre of land near Dunsop Bridge. The intrepid pair plan to enjoy their Christmas din

ner, in one direction or the other, at Tebay Services at junction 38 of the M6. To clarify the position, the Clitheroe Advertiser and

Times contacted Ordnance Survey. Press officer Paula Good explained: “ This is an

extremely contentious issue. Firstly, you have to be very careful how you describe it. The centre of the United Kingdom would be very different to the centre

Twinning town idea

by-Jean Miller

COULD Whalley be twinned with a town in Germany or even in the Czech republic? That question will be discussed

at a meeting to be arranged early in the New Year. At the annual meeting of Whal

ley Community Twinning Associ ation, the chairman, Steve Barker, spoke of the 20 happy years of twinning with Vihiers in France, but said this association was now "on ice" and it was not anticipated that it would be revived. However, several local families

both maintained their friendship with families in Vihiers and visit ed them. Secretary Eric Ronnan

announced that so far the group had been told of a town in Ger many and one in the Czech Republic through N orth West Twinning, which makes arrange ments. Seven local people had been made most welcome in Guglingen in Germany in May, but the people there had chosen to twin with Dorking. Of the 2,000 towns in the

scheme in Britain, 1,500 were twinned with France, 500 with Germany and the rest in other countries. Arrangements were well in hand

for the twinning association’s annual “Fete des Rois” , to be held in Whalley Abbey on January 7th. Thp hnldinv cnmmitfip mfim-

GENEROUS regulars at a Ribble Valley hotel left its new landlord with a dilemma recently, having filled a bar top charity box with loose change. Dave “Spike” Moore inherited

the Anthony Nolan Appeal dona tion box from the previous licensees at the Pendle Hotel, Chatburn, but had no idea what to do with it once it was full. Luckily, the Anthony Nolan Trust just happens to be this year’s chosen charity for Round Table, so when Clitheroe Round Table members heard of Spike’s dilemma, they were quickly on the case. Oiir nictiirp .<!hnws chairman

Hotel and Clitheroe Round Table are joining forces to stage a race night early next year to raise more money for the Anthony N o lan Trust. The ch a r ity was founded by

Shirley Nolan, whose son Anthony died in 1979 while awaiting a bone marrow transplant. His lasting legacy is a national bone marrow donor register, set up and paid for by the charity. Since 1974 it has helped to give more than 4,000 chil dren and adults a new chance of life.

of Great Britain. There are differing views as to the exact position of the ‘Centre of Britain’ - due to defin ing exactly what the expression means. “We would never categorically state an absolute cen

tre for any three dimensional land mass as this is simply not possible. The basic problem is one of determining the centre of an irregular three dimensional object on the surface of a sphere. Not only that, but the ‘irregular object’ is surrounded by water which keeps moving about. I f you consider the movement of tides on a beach, this changes the shape of the object on a con stant basis.” She added: “With all this in mind, we receive many

inquiries on this subject and have our own version of what we feel is the centre of Great Britain. In our opin ion - using just one of the many methods to calculate it - the centre (including the 401 associated islands) is seven kilometres north west of Dunsop Bridge on Whitendale Hanging Stones Grid Reference: SD 64188.3,56541.43. “ This calculation was achieved by linking a comput

er programme (based on the standard mathematical principle for determining the centre of a two dimen sional irregular object) to our 1:625,000 scale mapping. In basic terms it calculates the point at which a two dimensional irregular object would balance horizontal ly on the head of a theoretical pin. “ This is not categorical, but as close an answer as we

feel we can get to a question that is likely to be asked for many years to come. I t is our attempt to answer the impossible. Of course, the people of Haltwhistle believe that they are at the centre of Britain. They are not right or wrong - they have merely used a different measuring method.”
