make sure cards and gifts arrive on time by avoiding posting pitfalls. Following our tips will help customers get the most from their post."

12 Tips of Christmas 1. Never send cash or vouchers by 1st or

2nd class post. Instead, use more secure services such as Royal Mail's Special Deliv ery. 2. Use 2nd class stamps for posting cards

and small gifts. 2nd class offers a more reli able service during the festive period than 1st class. 2nd class stamps cost 21 pence; 1st class are 30 pence. 3. Address your item clearly, always

include the postcode, and make sure there is a return address written on the reverse. 4. Contact Royal Mail if you don't know

a postcode. Call 0906 302 1222 (premium rate) during working hours, or 08457 111 222 at all other times. 5. Ask at the post office i f the service you

are being offered covers your item for com pensation in the event of loss or damage and how much for. 6. Tell post office staff if you are posting

an irreplaceable item such as photograph negatives. They can advise you on different insurance levels. 7. Retain receipts, postal dockets and ref

erence numbers until you're sure the item has been delivered. Remember - always request a certificate

of posting. 8. Internet shoppers should make sure the

postal service the seller uses is the appropri ate one: for example, does it ensure that gifts arrive on time and is suitably secure? 9. Before you sign for an item you are

receiving that requires a signature, check for damage.

• Continued from previous page 10. Protect your gift: use a box or padded

bag to protect contents; clearly mark frag ile packages and point this out to post office staff; perishable items must be packed so that no liquid can leak out and the parcel should be marked "perishable". 11. Post on time - Royal Mail's last post

ing dates for sending Christmas cards and gifts are: First Class Tuesday December 20th Second Class Saturday December 17th Standard Parcels Wednesday December

14th Special Delivery Thursday December

22nd Senders can check www.royalmail.com

for the full list of last posting dates. 12. Complain if you have a problem with

your postal service (usually to Royal Mail on 08457 740 740). I f you are unhappy with the response you receive, contact Post watch on 08456 013265.

■ Royal Mail is reminding customers to

“wrap up well” this Christmas to make sure all their presents arrive safely. A staggering two billion cards, letters

and parcels will be handled by the company during December and, although postal staff take e v ery care when handling items, sometimes the contents may get separat ed from their packaging. By following these tips customers can

help to ensure that all parcels arrive at the correct address and on time. • Use a box or padded bag to protect the contents. Items can easily become detached

from paper wrappings. • Fill out containers with cushioning like

bubble-wrap. 0 Always put a return address on the

item. 0 Alw a ys put a contact name and

address inside. 0 Seal securely with nylon or -vinyl tape

along all edges and openings. Putting correct postcodes on all letters

and parcels will help Royal M a i l staff process the mail quicker and more accu

rately. A R o y a l M a i l Spokeswoman said:
