Race ace battles back to the top
By Phil Simpson
RACE ace Dave Walker has proved th a t anything can be achieved if you set your mind to it.
Four years ago, the 44-year-
old broke his collar bone riding in the Anglesey Grand Super bike event, forcing him to sit out the entire 2002 season. But he has battled back to
climb his way back up the lad der, and become Preston and District 600cc champion. I t has been an eventful few
years for Walker, known as Buzby to his friends, finally cul minating in his title triumph last season. That came 12 months after
he missed out on the title, on the final corner of the final race of the campaign, by just 200ths of a second! T h a t prompted Walker to
trade his Honda CBR in for a “more competitive machine”, a Kawasaki ZX6R. And after surrendering the
title to Wigan’s Russ Mount- ford in 2003, he gained his revenge to relegate him down to
second spot last season. And he admits he is going all
o u t for the double this time around, as he also competes in the Open Class Championship. He said: “I t was hard work
after my accident, and to battle back only to lose the title on the last race was demoralising. “But to win it last season was
a dream, everything I ’d worked for came right. “This season hasn’t gone to
badly either a t this moment in time - I ’ve won four out of four in the 600c Class and took three
wins and a runners-up spot in the Open. “But my ambition this sea
son is to claim both titles, and then try and get on the podium in the Anglesey Grand a t the end of the season.” The Preston and D is tr ic t
Ghampionship is run over 14 rounds between March and October, a t Wigan’s Three Sis ters and the Anglesey circuit in North Wales. As well as that. Walker also
competes in the Wirral lOOcc Championship in Anglesey, as well
as the Cheshire and Nantwich Championships at Anglesey and Oulton Park, Cheshire. Walker is sponsored by John
Walsh at Buckhurst Plant Hire a t Waterfoot, as well as Keith Clement Auto Electrical Ser vice at Chatburn. However he is on the lookout
for more, and anyone interested in sponsoring Dave can contact him (07970 057416). Dave would also like to thank
Bill and Pam Redmayne, for all their help and support over the past few years.
S E C O N D -p la c e d Clitheroe secured a 4-0 win away a t Whalley B to keep their promo tion bid alive. In the top match
Roger Ravenscroft and Derek Parrott won an edgy encounter 6-4 6-3, holding their own serves throughout but being able to break at the key moments. On the other court
rehable second stringer Phil Mileham once again teamed up with Daniel Bush and they ran out 6-1M . The return rubbers
provided something of a contrast and the most competitive match of the day. Ravenscroft and Par ro t t shut out their opponents 6-1 6-2 and pulled up a grandstand seat to see if their team-mates could secure all five points. The initial signs
were good with Bush’s heavy serves leaving Mileham little to do in the first set. However,
Whalley always fight hard in these matches and when they took the second set 6-4 it looked as it the tide had turned. In the end Clitheroe ensured they took all the points with a 6-2 finish. Clitheroe junior
team maintaineid their 100% record with a 7- 2 victory over Whalley to extend their lead at the top of the table. Andrew Hartley and
Matt Hanson strug gled initially against a strong Whalley A pair losing the first set 6-3, but they responded superbly with a 6-0 whitewash. Meanwhile, Mark
Higson and Jennifer Holgate had a com fortable victory against the B pairing to give Clitheroe the half-time advantage. In the reverse
matches, Higson and Holgate had a very entertaining tussle with the A pair and after losing the first set
m Clitheroe’s derby day win
7-0 they dug in to win the second 6-3 to share i the match. Hartley and Hanson
also won well against the B pair to complete the win. O Saturday saw' disap pointing results for Whalley with only the C team securing any points. The A team lost by
four rubbers to nil againstParkw'ood. It was left to the C
team to restore some honour against Fenis- cowles B. Tom Ormerod and Paul Jenkins w'on both their matches in straight sets, whilst Andrew Cuyes and Peter Hayes won their match against the opposing second string in three sets.
