HE old MG ZR was a reasonably good look ing car. Not cutting edge in any particular way,
but chunkily aggressive and purposeful, its four-square stance giving it genuine rear view mirror presence. The headlamps are the
first thing many will finger as different, with sculpted, clear-lensed units covering twin lamps rather than the separate pods the original ZR sported. The rear end is even more
distinctive, with the number plate position moved down wards to allow for a bold bootlid with a bold MG badge on the centre line. Revised alloy wheel designs are also offered. The interior has been

tidied up, with less of a ran dom feel than the early car. There are now four circular satin chrome air vents across the dashboard top, and while you still will not mistake it for an Audi TT, the ZR’s fas cia looks a good deal more contemporary. The centre console has
been given a thorough makeover and soft touch switchgear replaces some rather brittle feeling minor controls. The locking and alarm system has also been thoroughly overhauled.
PrestonsGroup.Com W 01282720742 Up for the Cupra! Engine wise, the ZR range
has been left untouched, but the engineers at MG have not been twiddling their oily thumbs. Brake feel has been revised to offer more res-pon- sive feedback. A lower positioned clutch
pedal helps ergonomics and the throttle pedal has been altered to make heel and toe downshifts easier. The steer ing geometry has been altered for a more direct feel and new bushes for the rear suspension again offer better driver feedback. The latest ZR range will
doubtless be taken very seri ously indeed. Three years has proved time enough to change a good many percep tions.

What is more, the 160 b.h.p. diesel version is only slightly slower against the watch, making 60 in 7.4 seconds and recording a top speed of over 136 m.p.h. Where the most powerful diesel

would have specified from the out set, with the additional bonus of that amazing diesel engine. If you really want an affordable car that possesses a truly rounded reper toire of skills, the Cupra 1.9 TDI would be a very informed pick.
