to please everyone WE ar e very pleased with the amount of support we have received directly from Slaidburn residents regarding the proposed plans. At our recent open event held in

the Methodist chapel, the design team was on hand to speak to people individually about our proposed designs. A number of the suggestions

received were subsequently incorpo rated into the submitted plans. Visitors to the open event also had

the opportunity to view the alterna tive plans which we were more than happy to display. Since the event, we have received

some 200 letters of support for our plans and are particularly pleased that more than half of these have come from 54 Slaidburn households. We gave careful consideration to

the alternative proposals and con cluded they failed to address the needs or statutory requirements for a new village hall. We were also not impressed by the

suggestion that the space shortage, which the proposal’s authors expect ed, could be addressed by using two caravans parked alongside the village green. Our views reflect the feedback received at the open event I think it is important we recognise

there is already an unsightly and haphazard car parking arrangement

on the village green which serves both residents and chapel users. Our plans propose that this arrange

ment is reorganised to tidy the area in such a way as to allow continued park ing and more recreational use of the village green. The revised car park will not make

the escape of flood water from Croas- dale Beck any slower than at present. As one of our support letters says

“every village needs a good village hall and Slaidburn is no exception”. The plans submitted are for a hall

which has a slightly bigger footprint than the new hall at Tosside, but is far smaller than that at Chipping. We believe tha t Slaidburn’s pro

posed hall is the right size when you consider the size of the village, the needs of existing groups and the pro posed new activities. We believe our planned new village

hall will make a positive contribution to the village.

English Heritage has worked with

us throughout the design process and is supportive of the plans as is a large proportion of the community. We recognise that no solution will

please everyone but believe this plan has the support of the majority of stakeholders. The Slaidburn Property Trust and

its architects have always had a flexi ble approach to the appearance of the building and have'welcomed the wide range of opinions expressed. To the best of our ability we have taken account of these opinions and

tracked, our focus has to be on moving this project forward and listening to what the majority of people demand ed at our open event - “GET ON WITH IT!”.

JOHN PARRY, Chairman of Slaidburn Property Trust

Building is part of

village’s history HERE we go again! Just what is going on in the small, charming area of Slaidburn, set nicely in the heart of the beautiful Ribble Valley? Not too long ago, the local authori

ty turned down a proposal to totally demolish the historic Methodist chapel and to turn the site into some thing from "Star Wars." I subsequently saw a press photo

graph in your newspaper a few weeks ago with a Mr Parry from the Slaid burn Property Trust and some local children looking at the new plans. The article stated th a t all was

favourable! This is obviously mislead ing, as many of the local residents are not in favour. In fact yet another petition is

presently being completed to be sub mitted to the Ribble Valley Borough Council stating people's objections. Having seen copies of the recently- submitted architect proposals, as

highlighted in the article in the Advertiser and Times, it is clear that yet another space ship is proposed! Admittedly, they are going to keep

the front and sides of the main chapel, as instructed by English Her itage and other governing bodies. However, they now intend to

demolish the rest of the attached building, including the former Methodist school, in addition to building some other monstrosity at the back. The whole building is an integral

part of Slaidburn’s history and should be retained and not replaced with something put together to look like an outsized greenhouse or futuristic space globule. •This new proposal costing even

more money is another waste, espe cially in an area of important conser vation within the Ribble Valley and more suited to the regeneration of areas such as London, Manchester or Liverpool. This massive structure is totally

out of keeping with the rest of Slaid burn. All credit must go to those involved

in the building of the new Tosside Hall.

Slaidburn, too, should now have a

facility servicing all members of the local community. Many local residents have again

not been consulted and the views of those that did attend a meeting, I am reliably informed, were ignored. I am also led to believe that there

was meant to be a consultation pro cess between the residents, Ribble Valley Borough Council, English Her itage and the Slaidburn Property Trust, but no such meeting to my knowledge has taken place over these recent proposals. I also understand that the develop

ment will encroach on to the green which surely must be retained.

Just what is going on again in Slaid

burn? Come on you good people of the area - work together to get the right result!

AN artist’s impression of (he new Slaidburn Village Hall (s) Work together to

make a difference ALAN SCHOFIELD, in your April 1st letters page, analyses at length the unsatisfactory solutions proposed by the Boundary Committee for Local Government Review in this area. In all the detail, however, he misses

one very important point. These changes will only be imple

mented if there is a “Yes” vote in the referendum on Regional Government later this year. Whatever the deadline for submis

sions many of us believe that the Boundary Committee has already made up its mind. Rather than campaign at this stage

against any or all of its specific pro posals it is vital that we all pull

together to fight for a massive “No” vote to Regional Government. I have met no one in the Ribble Val

ley who wants Local Government boundaries to change. If we all work together on this when

the campaign begins, we can make a difference!

Pat on the back to

our sports desk COULD I take this opportunity to congratulate your sports desk on the excellent previews to the forthcoming Ribblesdale Cricket League 2004 sea son.

I’m sure I am not alone in welcom

ing the sound of leather on willow and the smell of linseed oil as once again our favourite summer game begins. As usual, the local league cricket season will be fiercely competitive and as a player myself, I look forward to strid ing out into battle in the local derbies. Could I encourage more of the

Advertiser's readers to go along and watch and support their local clubs as there is nothing better than swinging the trusty willow in front of a good crowd. Let us hope the season will be relatively rain-free and the local der bies are played in the right spirit, with "class A" competitive, but fair cricket played by both sides.

Thanks to nurses

who gave time ON behalf of the Rotary clubs of Clitheroe and Ribblesdale, I would like to say a sincere thank you to the seven local nurses who so willingly helped with the monitoring of blood pressures on our very successful Stroke Awareness Day. They gave up their free time, unpaid,

and were kept busy all day. Without their assistance, the whole project would not have been possible.

Experts cast their eye over cakes

RAINBOWS, Brownies and Guides from across the Ribble Valley entered an art com petition at Langho Community Centre. Mrs Jennifer Gee, Ribble Valley Division-

commissioner, and her team oversaw the art competition, which had a great many entries from units across the division. Categories included cake making, designing

cards, posters, pillow cases, flower-pot paint ing, flower arranging and creating animals from vegetables. Mrs Hazel Wharf, Ribble Valley Division

president, members of Whalley and Billington WI and a representative from the Trefoil Guild were among the judges. The WI members, undisputed cake makers

themselves, judged the cake making section. ; Picture shows members of the WI judging the cake competition, (s)
