Flawless flooring

Preparation is the key to success with your new floor

NEW flooring such as carpet, vinyl sheet, floor tiles or laminate needs to be laid on to a smooth, even surface for the best results. If your floorboards do not fit

this description, laying hardboard over them first is the ideal solu tion. This is a relatively easy job in

terms of skill, although it can be a big project, especially if you are doing a large room. Heavier floor tiles, such as slate or terracotta, will need added support, so use plywood panels underneath them, rather than standard 6mm hard board. Before you start, check that

there are no signs of damp or mould anywhere in the room and also make sure that the space underneath the floorboards is well-ventilated, usually in the form of an airbrick opening. Hardboard needs to adjust to

the humidity of the room before it's laid, so brush the rough side of each panel with a litre of water, then leave to dry out for 24 hours. Doing this allows the wood to expand a little, then shrink back to pull tight and lay flat, and is an essential part of the project to prevent swelling and puckering occurring every time the room gets a little damp. Find out where pipes and

wiring lie by taking up a couple of floorboards. This will enable you to work narrow strips of hard board into the overall covering, that can be removed for easy access should there be any faults that need fixing. To prepare the area to be cov- ■

ered and make it level as possible, hammer in any nail heads that are sticking out of the floorboards, screw down any creaking or loose boards, then power plane any real

ly uneven edges as necessary. The hardboard should be fitted

across the floorboards rough side up, using the longest, straightest wall as the starting point to help keep the edges in a straight line. Make use of any available space under the skirting boards by tuck ing the panels under them and be sure that they fit snugly, without any gaps in between. Stagger the joints of different rows so that none of them meet

up, then fix down with diamond headed panel pins at 100mm spac- ings round the edges and at 150mm in the middle. Drive nail heads right into the

wood so that they aren't sticking out. For rooms that have no long

square walls, a guide line needs to be created down the middle. To do this, measure the width

of the room at each end, divide by two, then lay the first row of pan els along the midpoint.

QUESTION: Is it a bad idea to paint over algae and lichens that have grown on timber outside?

Quick Fix - Short Answers To Tricky Questions good for longer.

so what can do to pre vent this?

ANSWER: Probably - because when the growths die, they will peel away from the wood and take the paint with them. Instead, prepare the surface by scraping, sanding and washing the green stuff away to get it perfectly clean.

QUESTION: Whenever I'm sawing timber boards or planks by hand, the underside splinters really badly

ANSWER: Lowering the saw angle to 25-35 degrees will probably help but you could also go for a saw with a smaller tooth size.

QUESTION: The out side of my house is looking drab and I want to spruce it up with a lick of paint. But which sort should I go for?

ANSWER: Go for the most expensive top quality exterior acrylic paint you can afford and see it as an investment. It will keep your walls pro tected and looking

QUESTION: Can you suggest something to help me stay on track when sawing through wood and piping because I never seem to end up with an even, straight edge.

ANSWER: The easiest. thing to do is draw around a piece of paper wrapped around the wood or piping, to give you a guide mark. Alternatively, use a pipe cutter for pipes.

QUESTION: What’s the best way to pre pare glossy surfaces for painting?

ANSWER: Use fine sandpaper to slightly roughen target areas so the paint can 'grip' better, then thorough ly brush away all the dust. Alternatively, use a commercial de- glosser.

QUESTION: A bulb has broken at the holder and I can't get it out. What should I do?

ANSWER: Turn off the power before you start anything, then push a carrot into the brass connector. It sounds odd but then you can use it as a handle to twist out.
