Sarah leads the way in county event

YOUNG race aces from the Ribble Valley had a speedy start into the New Year, as they earned them selves a number of medals. • Hundreds of youngsters and adults from all over.Lancashire gathered at Witton Park, Black burn, for the 2004 Lanctxshire Cross Country Championships. In the Under-13 girls’ race, Sarah

Crossley (13), who attends Ribbles- dale High School Technology Col lege, took both the individual silver medal, and, with team mates Leigh Lennon (12), Sarah Jones (12), and Maisie Bonney (12), the team sil ver. • The races wore also selection

races for the National Cross Coun try Championships, to be hold in March in Nottingham. For the second time, Sarah Crossley and Leigh Lennon both

earned their selection for the Lan cashire team.

^ In the Under-13 boys’ race, Rob

bie Schofield (13), who is a pupil at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, took the gold medal with an 18-sec- ond lead. In the Under-15 girls’ race. Bow-

land High School pupil Samantha Murray (14), who was running in her first year in this age group, came home in fourth place which earned her selection for the Lan cashire team. In the team race, she led her

team which included Ashleigh Williams (13), .Jennifer Mitchell (14), and Natalie Honey (14), into the bronze medal position. Our picture shows Sarah Cross-

ley, having scooped the silver medal, (s)

Elizabeth’s top award RIBBLE VALLEY athlete Elizabeth Highton was among the major

award-winners at the annual Burnley AC awards night last Friday. The talented teenager was presented with the Jumps Trophy at the

awards ceremony, an event that saw local athletes commended for their •prowess in both track and field events over the past year. Other winners on the night were Danielle Walker and Daniel Eck-

ersley who topped the bill on the night, with a hatful of awards apiece. Daniel received five awards and Ilaniello took home four.
