Post office closure raises village fears
by Robbie Robinson
THE closure of village post offices has raised more fears for the future of
small rural communities in the Rib- ble Valley.' The latest closure, albeit possibly a
temporary one, is a t Billington and is due to take place in September. The subpostmaster of the office in Rail
way View has resigned and customers will be advised to use Whalley Post Office on King Street or Langho Post Office on Whal ley Road.

stressed that the company is committed to maintaining rural post offices and they are doing all that they can to restore services. However, Ribble Valley MP Mr Nigel
Evans is asking that the Government acts to stop closures. He has also blamed it for causing the situation and not investing in rural post offices, as had been promised. He said: “The Government is directly
responsible for many post offices being shut with their move to pay benefits directly into banks. This has made many post offices simply unviable.”
He described how post offices throughout
the Ribble Valley are part of the rural way of life and often the hub of a village. He added: “Any closure is a great loss to a com munity and provides huge problems for the area as a whole.” The past four months has seen the reloca
tion of the post office in Bashall Eaves with in the hamlet, that in West Bradford has moved to the church and those in Pendleton and Barrow have closed. Anyone wishing to take over the post
office in Billington and who must be able to provide suitable, alternative premises, is asked to telephone the Post Office Ltd recruitment section on 0845 6016260.
