Grand prize giveaway

Sam Moore; Colne Municipal Hall; July 23rd

LEGENDARY “ Soul Man” Sam Moore will be sharing his smooth grooves with local audi ences next week.

The lead singer of 60s duo

Sam & Dave will appear at Colne Municipal Hall on Wednesday, July 23rd - and we have TWO tickets to give away. Prepare to hear classics such

as "Hold On! I’m Coming” , “ I Thank You” and, of course, the Grammy-winning "Soul Man” . For years Sam has been best

known as the trademark lead voice of Sam & Dave, but he is now stepping out of his own estimable shadows with “Plenty Good Lovin’ : The Lost Solo Album” . Astonishingly, this is Sam’s

first solo album. Equally astonishing is that

this record had been languishing in the vaults at Atlantic Records’

New York headquarters for 32 years.

He said: “ I think the vocals

and the music will stand the test of time. I’ve done some of these songs live in England, where the record was released earlier this year.”

Most of the album’s content

comes from covers, but are all radically rearranged in a proto- funk/soul style. For a chance to hear music

which has stood the test of time, call the Pendle Leisure box office on 01282 661234 — or answer the ' question in our coupon and you

could be one of our lucky win ners.

“Piglet’s Big Movie” (U); from its national release on Friday

*58 3 § b»mwss- J ' X ■ s j ? 4

THIS is a story of friend ship and appreciation as the gang from Hundred Acre Wood learn that it does not take somebody big to do big things. Piglet has an inferior'

feeling when his friends begin a “ honey harvest” and he is told that he is too small to help. When he dis appears, the others use his scrapbook as a map to find him — and in the process discover that this “Very Small Animal” has been a big hero in many ways. After an eventful search

and a dramatic climax, Piglet once again demon strates how large an influ ence he has been on his pals. For your chance to win

Modem look to Bizet’s classic

“Carmen”; Octogon Theatre, Bolton; August 27th to September 20th

BIZET’S famous opera “Carmen” is being given

a completely new look at Bolton Octogon next month. Chris Monks’ new version of this passionate

and sensual love story gives “ Carmen” a con temporary setting with Carmen becoming a supermarket checkout girl, who is having a casu al fling with security guard Johnny.

When Johnny goes to prison to cover for Car

men, she scores with celebrity footballer Tony Amor. Jilted, Johnny sees red. One of the most seductive operas ever written,

this new version of “ Carmen” was premiered at the New Vic Theatre to great acclaim in 1998. The production features all of Bizet’s original

and popular music with new lyrics in English. “Habanera,” “ The Toreador’s Song” and

other memorable melodies come together to pro vide an enthralling evening of humour, love, pas sion, jealousy and murder. “Carmen” , which opens on August 27th and

runs until September 20th is being staged as part of the Bolton Festival. On Wednesday September 3rd, 10th and 17th

the cast will perform a selection of the most pop ular songs from musicals and opera at Carmen Gala nights.

A festival to suit all tastes

Worldport Festival; The Lowry, Salford Quays; tomorrow until Monday

THE Lowry plays host to its first music festival this weekend. The Worldport Festival, which

opens tomorrow and runs until Mon day, is billed as a celebration of music from around the world. In both the Quays and Lyric The

atres, concerts featuring established stars provide the highlights in a fasci nating programme.

The Quays Theatre provides a

more intimate venue for Pinise Saul’s South African All-star band; Dennis Rollins’ Bad Bone & Co and the sen sational Afro sounds of Jalikunda from Senegal.

One of the most original and excit ing contemporary musicians around

today, guitarist Nitin Sawhney, will entertain. The festival also plays host to what

is considered by some to be Europe's finest gospel choir, the London Com munity Gospel Choir, pictured left. The North West Arts-backed festi

val also features Cuban band Irakere, and saxophonist Courtney Pine.
