tle as only two models come in for the ES treatment. The entry-level 316ti ES sees a BMW


model dip below £16,000, the 1.8-litre car pitching in at £15,995. Alternatively, there is the impressive 320td ES diesel that is priced at £18,995. BMW may have quickly been able to pick up the reins when it came to producing a front-wheel drive car (the MINI), building a better Rolls-Royce than Rolls-Royce were ever capable of and, within the space of a few seasons, establish itself as Formula One’s pre­ mier engine manufacturer but when it comes to getting the gist of special edition models it is utterly clueless. Here is a brief guide as to how the game is


normally played. Pick a slow-selling model from the range, team it with some slow-selling options (mediocre alloy wheels, unpopular paint finishes or questionable body addenda are always prime choices), dream up a halfway topical name and then get the calculator out. Tot up the cost of the extras from the over­ inflated options list prices, divide by three and then tack that amount onto the list price of the original car. Bingo - special edition nir­ vana. The first and most obvious indicator that


BMW has dropped a clanger is that it has priced the ES models below the price of the standard car. The company claims to have added £3,600 worth of extras to the 316ti and £2,845 to the 320td in turning them into ES variants yet the 316ti ES is a clear £545 less than a 316ti and the 320td ES is £755 less than a regulation 320td. This then begs the question “why would anybody in their right mind buy the more sparsely equipped and more expensive standard car?” Surely a more cost-effective strategy would be either to boost the equipment of the standard car or drop its price. While this may provoke some discus­ sion, what is not up for debate is the sheer amount of extras that the Bavarians have packed into the Compact ES models.


But which of the two models to go for?


The interior features an M sports steering


wheel trimmed in leather and a stereo upgrade to a CD player. Air conditioning is also includ­ ed as is additional storage space and an anthracite-coloured roof lining. The exterior benefits from body-coloured door handles and some attractive 16 in. alloy wheels. So, BMW has resisted the temptation to


add a heap of chintzy extras, resisted the temptation to saddle the car with a cheesy name and slashed a significant percentage from the car’s asking price. The only possible reason why is that the compact is a slow-sell­ ing line that needs all the help it can get. Wrong. With a healthy order book, the Com­ pact is one of the company’s star performers. Moreover, a recent survey that charted Britain’s slowest depreciating cars listed the BMW 3 Series Compact as the car that clung most tenaciously to its residual value. But which of the two models to go for? The


entry-level 316ti has its fair share of propo­ nents and its engine certainly feels punchier than the 116 b.h.p. would suggest, sprinting to 60 m.p.h. in just over 10 seconds before peak­ ing at 125 m.p.h. The engine is a revolutionary Valvetronic design. Of course, if fuel economy rates as a priori­


ty, the 320td Compact may well be your weapon of choice. The 320td’s common-rail system turns out a solid 150 b.h.p. and 2431b/ft of torque. Expect to average around 51 m.p.g. Whichever version you opt for, there can be


little argument about the value on offer. Or is there? Yes,- some will point out that for your £16,000, the 316ti ES is still only offering you 116 b.h.p., whereas a SEAT Leon Cupra fronts up with 180 b.h.p. and two extra doors for a grand less. However, keep the cars for three years, do the sums and see which car has cost you less. In any case, there is an argument for pointing out that if costs are everything, why are BMWs even under consideration?

valid a tactic as any other? There are many cars that have staked their


success on sharky good looks, but the PT Cruiser Electric offers a reassuring backup in the form of no-nonsense mechanicals and well thought through cabin. No, it is not quite as versatile as the latest generation of seat spin­ ning, flipping and vanishing seven-berth mini MPVs but for most of us, the Cruiser offers a welcome alternative to their almost wilful blandness. C-MAX? To anyone with an eye for design these cars represent a creeping grey monotony that is slowly engulfing our roads. For your neighbour’s sake, if nothing else, the


PT Cruiser Electric has to be worth a look. On the road, expect the PT Cruiser to sound, ride and handle much like the Chrysler Neon it is based upon: not that excitingly in other words. Rest to 60 occupies about 12 seconds on the


way to a 110 m.p.h. maximum, so it is rapid enough - and more so in the States where a 2.4- litre version is offered. Fuel economy is okay, although if squeezing


the most miles per gallon is a priority, you would probably be better off eschewing the Electric and instead opting for a PT Cruiser 2.2-litre CRD diesel. You can be guaranteed it won’t be as blue though. In concentrating merely on the PT Cruiser


Electric’s aesthetics, it is almost as if Chrysler is having a knowing chuckle with owners. Whatever view you choose to take, it is a clever and pragmatic strategy and one that will doubtless pay dividends. Like we said - child’s play.
