litre 500 b.h.p. SL model that accelerates to 60 m.p.h. in 4.5 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 m.p.h., why on earth would you need to introduce another? Especially when it is priced, within a few per cent of the exist ing car, the SL55 AMG? The answer seems to be because Mercedes can. Of course, at this end of the market,
customers are accustomed to getting what they want. Despite the fact that the SL55 AMG is, with almost unanimous agreement, regarded as one of the best cars in the world, Mercedes had a twin- turbo-charged 5.5-litre V12 that it was unable to resist fitting to an SL body.

HEN it comes to sensible choices in the supermini sector, the Skoda Fabia has long ruled the roost.
If you appreciate quality, value for money
and low running costs, the Fabia package is a tough one to beat, especially if you plump for one with a diesel engine. The only fly in the ointment was that the 100 b.h.p. 1.9-litre TDi PD engine was beyond the budgets of some and the 64 b.h.p. 1.9-Iitre SDi alternative was not overly attractive. Skoda has subsequently rectified that problem by the addition of an appealing 75 b.h.p. 1.4-litre TDi PD diesel engine that slots between the two 1.9-litre units.
Far from being some sort of gap-plugging
makeweight, the 1.4TDi has instantly assumed the mantle of best value Fabia bar none. Prices start at just £9,255 for the 1.4TDi Classic hatchback, with the estate ver sion tacking another £700 onto that price. Opt instead for the well equipped Comfort version and you can expect to fork out from £10,155. Of course to some this will still seem an inordi nate pile of money to spend on a compact Skoda hatchback, but never mind the width, feel the quality. The engine is a good place to start. The
Volkswagen Group (of which Skoda is a sub sidiary) has persevered with the high-pressure Pump Duse technology instead of the indus try standard common rail diesel engine design. Although the PD engines are not quite as smooth as some of the best common rail units, they are still acceptably refined and have a genuinely impressive mid-range punch. Excel lent fuel economy and low emissions are another benefit of the Pump Duse engines and the Fabia 1.4 turns in an average of 61.4 m.p.g. with just 124g/km of carbon dioxide emitted per kilometre. Skoda claims the Pump Duse technology is
in many respects superior to common rail. The engines use a pump-nozzle injection kit which means that there is no need for a separate pump or high-pressure rails as they are inte gral to the compact injection unit. The approach seems to work.

The Fabia estate is well worth a look, com
peting in a field where genuine rivals are few. Whilst it is not the largest estate car around, it certainly offers significant extra utility over the standard Fabia hatchback. The first thing that catches the eye is that rounded rump. Surely this has'a catastrophic effect on load space when compared with the more perpen dicular lines of something like a Volvo? Actu ally, no. Despite its soft angles, the Fabia estate can still manage a load space of 426 litres with the rear seats in place, which is more than apparently larger cars like the Alfa 156 Sportwagon or the Audi A4 Estate. Forget the plasticky feel of old Skodas: the
materials used are of a higher quality than most rivals, even on the entry-level Classic model. The design of the dashboard has that typical Volkswagen Group minimalism but it feels absolutely indestructible. The Fabia should also stay where you park
it, too, having been judged top of a car maga zine’s table of most secure superminis. On the road, the handling is tuned to please
the family driver rather than the enthusiast. Expect it to ride and respond with all the qual ity of a VW Golf and you will not be disap pointed. The TDi unit feels strong and willing, and is probably the best engine option in the entire Fabia line up. Although it may not be the most exciting
car on the market, when you get out the cal culator and take everything into account, this Skoda Fabia 1.4TDi PD may just be the most sensible. It is very well built, covered by an impres
sive warranty, will cost little to run and will still yield an impressive resale value when the time comes to sell on. We motorists get punished financially every time we turn a wheel. Here is a rather enjoy-

1.4TDI looks an attractive package and one that will doubtless convert more customers to the charms of Ibiza ownership.

urgent supercharged V8 the SL55 uses, instead offering a little more refinement but no less get up and go. Priced at £93,000, the SL600 is, in the light of its achievements, still something of a bar gain, especially when compared to cars like the Aston Martin Vanquish, the Fer rari 575M and the Lamborghini Mur- cielago, all of which would struggle to keep up and none of which can hold a candle to the mighty Mercedes’ 5901b/ft of torque. The interior has been appointed with a
few more luxury features too, the SL’s embossed Nappa leather chairs incorpo rating massaging multi-contour back rests. The steering wheel and gearstick are
trimmed in wood and leather and the COMAND information system has a built-in TV tuner. A Nokia 6310i mobile hands-free telephone is concealed in the centre armrest and sound comes courtesy of a very punchy Bose speaker system. Externally, the SL600 can be identified
by its five-spoke 18 in. alloy wheels and the V12 badging tucked into the side air intakes. Chrome trim around the radiator and silver brake calipers also mark out this behemoth. It also feels markedly dif ferent as soon as you start the engine. Rather than the hard-edged bark of the SL55’s V8, the SL600’s V12 settles down into an almost imperceptible hum. Mercedes claims the SL600 is a respon
sible supercar, returning a relatively impressive 19.6 m.p.g. on the combined cycle and emitting less CO2 than a V6 Jeep Cherokee.
Unlike both the Fabia and the SEAT’S other in-
house platform-sharing cousin, the VW Polo, there is no entry-level SDI diesel option. SEAT instead opts for this vastly superior 1.4-litre TDI. The SEAT Ibiza 1.4TDi is not a particularly
sporty supermini but its styling and cheeky image allow it to mop up sales of those who feel a
Skoda Fabia or a Volkswagen Polo is just that lit tle bit too staid. In the Volkswagen Group’s network of niches,
sub-niches and micro-niches, the Ibiza 1.4TDi offers a welcome breath of fresh air for anybody looking for a car that is sensible without being invisible. Expect" more awards this way soon.
