* PROUD: Mr John Hartley with his 1933 Austin 7 (s)

A 1933 Austin 7 appearing at this year’s show is not all it appears to be. I t began life as a box

saloon. Now it is a racy sports model that gets up to 60 m.p.h. with a roar of its finely-tuned engine. Owner Mr John Hartley,

of Earby, says the box-body to racer conversion was all a matter of wartime econom ics.

“Young men couldn’t

afford to buy a new car after the war, so they modi fied what was available,” he said. “They didn’t want a box

saloon, so simply put on a new sports body. Mine has a Paxton sports body, built

by Westfield Engineering, London. Companies like this sprang up all over Eng land in those days.” He has had the car for

five years, after he bought it from a friend in Carn- forth. But he had previous ly owned another Austin 7 and is a dyed-in-the-wool Austin fan. The problem with older

cars like the Austin 7, he admits, is not getting them to go, but getting them to stop. No disc-brakes on this one, just a cable. So, in the interests of safety, he has modified the braking. And has come fourth in

his class at the recent Tod- morden show.

AN old brown Rover 2000 brought in to Lan cashire from the Isle of Man in 1992 has been restored to near-perfection by Mr Keith Walm- sley, of Nelson. So well restored, in fact, that it won the Best

in Class award at last year’s Classic Car Show. Mr Walmsley, a former chairman of the Pen-

die and District Rover Association, hopes to repeat the performance this year, But, like all classic car enthusiasts, it is the

rebuilding, the driving, the polishing and the sheer enjoyment of owning a classic car that comes first. Now sprayed Cameron green, the Rover

2000 P6 - of 1972 vintage - was built up on a base unit with panels from a former Rover which had been crushed by a lorry, or sourced second-hand from various dealers. I t had a twin-carb engine, too. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep the origi

nal Isle of Man registration, which was 6776 MAN. I t is now JFN 264L,” Mr Walmsley said.

He added: “I originally had a Rover 2200 single carb car, but decided to get the 2000 as

it was a rarer model. I t is a very good motor way car. “I am no mechanic, hut I do all the work myself and it is a wonderful hobby. During the

'summer my wife and myself are out almost every Sunday at shows, and the Burnley show is one of our favourites. I have only missed it once since it began, and that was because the car was off the road at the time.” Aged 74 and retired, Mr Walmsley formerly

worked for Pendle Council. He was introduced to the world of Rover clubs through his son. Mr Walmsley said: “He had gone into the

ambulance service and met two ambulance men who had Rovers. When he mentioned I had one, they suggested I join the local club, which I did and have enjoyed ever since.” The Rover, he admits, is not his everyday car.

He uses a Ford Fiesta for getting around on an everyday basis.

But when he wants something really special

in motoring, he gets behind the wheel of the 2000 P6 and listens as its finely-tuned twin carbs simply hum down the highway.

A RARE 1935 Rover 12 sports saloon - one of only three in the world - has been entirely rebuilt in Burnley with all parts and spe cialist paint being sourced locally. Bought as a wreck - or as the

classic car community calls it “a ham find” - in 1988, it has been restored oyer the years by Bum- ley enthusiast Roger Hutchinson. “It is a rarity. There is only one

other in the UK and another in Australia, so it is in a club of three,” he said. “I t has an aluminium body,

which was very unusual for those times,.and only 800 were pro duced in 1935, with production ceasing soon afterwards. “I had never had a classic car

before, but saw it advertised in a magazine.”

Roger added: “I t stood in a

barn in Scotland from 1964 to 1988, and was owned by a naval commander. “It was bought new by a titled

lady in Winchester, so it has actu ally only had three owners.

“I even managed to find where

the naval commander - Comman der Adams - went to university. "Apparently, he used the car in

Oxford in the 1950s and I found a 1954 parking ticket from Baliol College in it.” Roger also owns a second

model from the same year, which' is a variant of the Rover 12, but restoration work has not yet started on it. “I t has been the inspiration for

the one I have been restoring. I check on it to see the original work before I carry out restora tion. I stripped down the first

model to nuts and bolts and have rebuilt the engine, the chassis and the electrics.

"All the chrome work has been

re-done and I am re-spraying it Brooklands green now,” he said.

He will be taking it, on a trailer, to the Classic Car Show, and says

he would like to take the second, Burnley. I have had a lot of help unrestored car as well, hut does not think he will manage it this year.

“Restoring this has been a fas

cinating hobby for me, and it is surprising that I could find all the parts I needed for it right here in

from local firms, including paint and bodywork specialists, and people have been very keen to help with the project. “The car has really been‘Made

in Burnley’ as far as I am con cerned,” he said.
