Bill has a classic collection

MR Bill Heywood is secretary of the Clas sic Car Show and also vice-chairman of the Pendle and District Rover Association. He has had an interest in classic cars for many years, his first being a 1931 Morris Minor in 1962.

Bill currently has: a 1929 Morris Oxford

tourer, two-seater and dickey which he has restored; a 1955 Rover F5 saloon, which has had partial restoration; a 1949 Land Rover requiring full restoration; and the 1953 Land Rover, which is featured on the pic ture below. Bill says: “This is an original specifica tion Series I 86in. wheelbase 1954 model

registered November 16th, 1953, and still with its original two-litre petrol engine. “It is now fitted with a hard top, which

used to be a wood shed, but the original- type soft top is still at home and easy to change if required.”

All set for another truly classic show

ONCE again it is time to get out those classics, dust them down, give them a good home ser vice and get them down to Towneley Park, Burnley.

We had a very good show last year, and

everything is set for another good one this year. The weather never seems to deter people

from coming to the show to see our cars and bikes.

The drum majorettes last year were a real

treat and everyone loved the buzz they gave to the prize presentation. We now have the new very smart loos, and the restaurant is very welcoming.

Burnley Rotary Club is overseeing the enter

tainment, stalls and car parking and is doing an excellent job - as is East Lancashire News papers with its advertising and sponsorship of the whole event. It is good to have such dependable people to

work in conjunction with. I trust I will see many of you there, helping

to make it another great day for local people and our club.

The Rover Sports

Register is now 50

BRITAIN’S longest-established club for the Rover marque, the Rover Sports Register, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2003. Many special activities are being held

this year, the key event being the Golden Anniversary Rally held over the last week end of July. This culminated in a gathering at Blenheim Palace, near Oxford. All Rover enthusiasts are welcome to

attend events, and the club is especially keen to encourage owners (whether club members or not) of earlier Rover products - cycles,

motorcycles, veteran and vintage cars - to take part.

The Rover Sports Register (RSR) is so- named because it was originally formed by a group of enthusiastic owners of Rover Sports tourers in 1953.

It soon began to embrace older saloon

Rovers, and over the years has evolved to become the only UK-based international club that covers the entire spectrum of Rover products, from cycles to current models. Given the long and rich history of the

Rover name since it was first used for Starley and Sutton’s tricycle in 1884, this adds a

owning a Rover, so that they can get to know about the various models before deciding which one (or ones) to become attached to. At the other extreme, several members own small “fleets” of Rover and Land Rover vehi

cles representing anything up to 120 years of the marque. The core membership is based on pre-1949 cars, but a substantial number of later cars also feature. The RSR co-operates with other Rover

clubs, such as the individual model clubs for the various post-1949 models and Rover clubs overseas; many enthusiasts enjoy dual or'even multiple membership. Recent developments in the RSR include a

new larger A4 format and extra pages for its bi-monthly magazine, “Freewheel”, and the club is actively preparing for its second half- century.
