The shape of the pistons and the clever working of a set of valves make the air ‘tumble’, thus creating more efficient combustion. So far so good, but don’t a num ber of other manufacturers have the same set up? No. Where FSI engines really impress is their
behaviour under part throttle loads. Whereas before, part throttle meant just that, partially strangulating the output by closing a butter fly valve, the FSI system can be run with the throttles in a more efficient open position. How? In effect by creating a rich fuel mix directly next to the spark plug and a leaner mix in
other.parts of the combustion cham ber. This is not only more efficient in terms of how much fuel enters the chamber in the first
’ place but i t also means th a t less energy is • wasted as heat to the cylinder block.1 In effect, a blanket of air shields the ignited fuel from the walls of the cylinder.

a- CVT (continuously variable transmis sion) the Clio'Quickshift instead utilises a conventional five-speed manual gearbox but does away with the clutch pedal; There is still a clutch, buried away out of sight, but it is actuated automatically when it realises the driver is changing gear. If you
are feeling especially indolent you can set the gearbox in a mode that does its best to imitate a fully automatic gearbox. -
-Driven hard, GOm.p.h. is 16.4 seconds away en route to a top speed of 106 m.p.h;
not outstanding but in the context of its native environment the Clio Quickshift
does not make a bad fist of things. I t is cer tainly a good deal better than the old 60 b.h.p. eight-valve 1.2 the basic Clio used to

that will delight some and frustrate others. If you need a dual-purpose car that dou bles up equally well in the city and 'on •longer runs, the Clio puts in a mixed per
formance. As a dedicated city car it is a good deal stronger,-especially a t prices which are not far removed from something VWLupo sized. I t is worth taking an extended test drive
to judge for yourself whether the Quick shift gearbox merits the additional outlay. For every person that finds it irritating, another will consider it a blessing. Try before you buy.
