A real question of convenience for councillors

A QUESTION of convenience has been raised by Ribble Valley councillors. Members of the bor- currently used by people,

said the proposed new location for the toilets in th e park was very secluded and isolated and could give rise to vandalism or inappropri a te behaviour. The report added th a t the cemetery toilets, 100m.

council's Director of Commercial Services, said the last thing the council wanted to do was make changes which would reduce the dignity of the grieving process. Councillors agreed to

visit the site and wait for the outcome of further investigations.

Mock mountain rescue is given a real-life feel on Saddle Fell

by Natalie Cox

A MOCK exercise nearly turned into a real-life res cue for a Ribble Valley-

based team. Members of the Bowland

Pennine Mountain Rescue Team had ju s t finished an annual exercise in the Trough of Bowland when they were

called to a real life situation on Saddle Fell, just west of Chip ping. However, paramedics from

the North-West Air Ambulance were first on the scene, airlifting a casualty to safety. Twenty-five members of the

Dunsop Bridge-based moun tain rescue team had been tak ing part in the weekend exer cise, putting their search and medical skills to the test in a

scenario which saw them look ing for a group of fell runners who had been missing overnight. - Once the missing runners

were located, four appeared to be in need of medical treatment and two were evacuated the two''miles from th e top of Clougha, a large rocky mound at the north end of the Trough of Bowland, across open moor land and on to the Bowland

Pennine team's headquarters in the Ribble Valley. The aim of th e exercise,

which always takes place at the end of January, is to enable local rescuers to share their expertise with counterparts forming other local teams. This year's event had been organised by training officer Mr Phil Hill. Team members are pictured

taking part in the evacuation from the fell.
