L et’s face it, when we get into a Fiat, any Fiat, we do so armed with a vast weight of expectation, not all of it good. The same used to be true of sportier cousins from Alfa Romeo, but tha t s . changed for the good in recent years. As the Stilo family hatchback featured here becomes an increasingly common sight on our roads, you can expect the same thing to happen at Fiat. Certainly, it competes on completely equal terms with arch­ rivals like Ford’s Focus, VWs Golf and


Peugeot’s 307. Bar perhaps safety, no other area of car design


has progressed so far so fast as that of interior fit and finish. Drive a ten-year-old car, even the best built - a Mercedes S-class for instance - and the interior fit and finish will feel cheap next to the Stilo. This is precisely the effect' that Fiat were after. The expensively ‘slush- moulded’ fascia and the attention to detail paid to the colour combinations, the materials cho­ sen in the cabin and the sheer design input

I t also stacks up favourably against the cream of today’s crop, and Fiat have managed to pull this off without demanding too much addition-. al outlay from the end customer. , . Prices, after all, start at £10,835 for the entry- level 80bhp 1.2-litre three-door model and rise through £500 increments as you progress


. through the family tree. The five-door version is also £500 more and both bodystyles come in all derivatives. At 103bhp 1.6-litre level, there’s a choice of Active or Dynamic trim lev­ els (again, £500 apart), as there is if you opt for the 115bhp JTD diesel version (from £13,335). The 133bhp petrol 1.8-litre model comes only in Dynamic form, while the flagship model is the 170bhp 2.4-litre 20v Selespeed Abarth


variant (from £15,635). Like th e Brava, and Bravo lin e s th a t i t replaces, the Stilo looks quite different in three and five-door guises. Although the two vari­ ants sit on the same floorpan,.the engineers have cleverly teased the five-door bodyshell into a shape 50mm higher, 28mm wider and


66mm longer. The airiness of the interior is helped by the option of a full-length sunroof, dubbed the Sky Window by Fiat, which makes the five-door car’s interior feel as spacious as current class'leaders such as the Peugeot 307 and Honda Civic. What the Stilo five-door \ pulls off more cleverly than both these rivals is the incorporation of a number of ideas from MPVs such as sliding and reclining rear seats, folding tray tables and a multitude of cubbies, drawers, boxes and cupholders. The three-door model is a different proposition. Lower, more aggressive and to most, more attractive, it shares only bonnet headlamps and grille with its more practical sibling. Drop into the driving seat after driving the five-door and you’ll do just tha t - drop. With a seating position 50mm lower, you hunker down into. the car. Drive the cars.in the opposite order and you’ll feel as i f you’re perched on a barstool. Weird. Safety is well taken care of, with even entry-level models fitted with no fewer than six airbags, plus five three-point seat belts, anti-lock brakes and a traction con-' trol system.


For the average family hatch customer, the Stilo hits the bullseye, but the Fiat isn’t going to appear above the Golf, 307 and Focus in many comparison tests tha t we can imagine. Don’t let tha t dissuade you: its priorities are


just different. As Antony Sheriff, Fiat’s head of product development notes, “The very essence of the Stilo is its substance.” Think about what you really use the family hatch for, test drive the Stilo and see if it doesn’t tick all the boxes.
