‘Baby’ Jaguar now has wider appeal

■ OST things operate in .cycles and


the car market is no


exception. Thirty years ago,


the notion of a Jaguar gaining credibility by being based on a Ford would have been utter­ ly beyond the pale. Things change, how­


ever, and the Jaguar X- TYPE 2.0-litre V6 is a prime example of the shifting power balance among the serious auto­ motive players. Ford, as you are prob­


ably aware, owns Jaguar. The British company figures in a portfolio of manufactur­ ers that also includes Volvo, Lincoln, Aston- Martin and Land Rover - an elite selection of marques which Ford labels the Premier Auto­ motive Group. • Times are tough for expensive cars and at the 2001 launch of Jaguar’s X-TYPE, much discus­ sion centred around the four-wheel drive plat­ form fitted to the 2.5 and 3.0-litre V6 models. When, people wanted


to know, would a less expensive two-wheel


drive system be mated to a smaller engine, so that the baby Jaguar could be priced to appeal to a wider range of buyers?

(£2,000 less than the 2.5-litre version), the X-


TYPE 2.0 is the answer to that question. The two-litre engine is, in fact, a 2.1-litre, six- cylinder unit cranking


out 157 b.h.p. While that is a fair fig­


ure for a normally-aspi­ rated two-litre unit, it is by no means spine tin­ gling and goes some way to explaining the prag­ matic approach to the car’s drive configuration. The space efficiency


and light driveline weight of the front-drive layout led Jaguar’s engi­ neers to a natural con­ clusion. With all-wheel drive, the X-TYPE 2.0- litre would be something of a sluggard. If the front-wheel


drive Ford Mondeo chassis layout was'-' utilised, power to weight ratios would remain respectable. And so it proves. Able to hit 60 m.p.h.

had a very specific feel to their helms, due in no small part to the input of Mike Cross, then- chief chassis engineer. When Cross signs a car off, you can normally rely on it being thor­ oughly sorted and the X-TYPE 2.0 V6 is no exception.


A big specification list


is where Jaguars tradi­ tionally trounce their Teutonic opposition and the X-TYPE 2.0 V6 is no exception. Even the base model is fitted with a 120-watt Alpine audio system, air conditioning with pollen filter and a driver’s seat with electric height adjustment.


Fiesta’s getting bigger

November, 1999, when the Fies­ ta Mk V was launched, while others would note that both the Mk V and the 1995 Mk IV were really only rehashes of the 1989 Mk III. The Mk VI we examine here


is so radically different that some observers have questioned why Ford did not call it some­ thing completely different in the way it did with the Escort/Focus. That would be to ignore the


nation’s affection for the Fiesta. With the Mk VI Fiesta, Ford


has consciously made it a signif­ icantly larger car. In fact, it is 87mm longer, 50mm wider and 100mm taller in.lhe five-door guise we are to initially rcccive.Thrcc-door and mini- MPV based versions will be along later. So, it is not.as easy to park or


as simple to thread through city streets as the old car. Whether it is better looking


will be up for debate. Whereas the front end cribs its styling cues from the Focus, the rear end divides opinion, looking like a bevelled and chamfered Vaux- hall Corsa. Beautiful it is not. Three petrol engines are


offered, a 67 b.h.p. 1.3-litre eight-valve, a 16-valve 79 b.h.p. 1.4 which looks set to be the most popular, and a range-top­ ping 1.6-litre 16-valve which is good for 99 b.h.p. For those looking to squeeze a few more miles from their gal­ lon, a latest-generation TDCi common-rail diesel unit is


•‘offered. With 67 b.h.p. on tap, it is no tarmac scorcher, but its llSlb/ft of torque guarantees a relaxed drive. Although Ford has concen­


trated on improving cabin space,


it has not rested on its laurels when it comes to driving dynamics. Granted, the recipe docs not


at first appear promising, this high-sided car wearing a rela­ tively state-of-the-ark twist- beam rear axle powered by a series of engines with modest power figures. However, the handling in this


Fiesta is far more competent than that of its predecessor and this should be praise enough for most. Its handling is elevated to a


position above and beyond any • existing supermini, while its ride and refinement is compara­ ble with the class best cars. The steering was obviously


engineered by somebody who understands the needs of keen


drivers, being nicely weighted and rich in feedback without becoming a wearing distraction. The Fiesta shrugs off mid- corner bumps well and has a


genuine big car feel. Equipment levels are good,


with all Fiestas being fitted with


electric front windows, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, intelligent windscreen wipers, CD stereo and central locking. It is a tough call, the Fiesta


Mk VI. Objectively, it seems to trump its predecessor in any area you care to mention. It also appears to give its key rivals a similar working over. It is hugely fit for purpose,


displays an incredible depth of engineering and, exterior lines aside, is probably as good as could have been hoped.
