Act poses problems in housing teen homeless
by Tim Procter
"DIFFICULTIES" in dealing with young homeless people are likely to persist locally, says a council report. T h e new Homelessness A c t p u ts
re sp o n s ib i l i ty for un d er-1 8 s w ith nowhere to live on local authorities such
as Ribble Valley Borough Council, i : Housing manager Christine Grimshaw presented a report to the Housing Com mittee on the first few months of the Act. "Already, there has been a significant
increase in the number of presentations from people under the age of; 18," reveals the report. I t says three of this age group
. are currently living at council hostels in , Clitheroe and Longridge.
- ,v
' On top of th a t , the law now presses councils to limit the time homeless fami lies have to stay in accommodation which is not self-contained. The report, says this issue needs addressing as a m a t te r of urgency by the council. Work to alter some of the accommoda
tion a t the former Joiner's Arms, Clitheroe, to make it self-contained is now under way, says the report. I t will make bedsits into flats, helping the council meet the "self-contained" feature of the act.
V More reports on the working of the act and implicatiohsfor the council are to be presented to the committee as time goes
