Uke a hollywood superstar attending the launch of their blockbuster movie, Ford have arrived fashionably late Into the modem small van market But; Instead of rolling up In a 40ft limousine complete with swimming pool, mini-bar and gymnasium, they've brought us the Transit Connect


The man behind the famous blue oval must have been reasonably confident In - the Transit Connect's abilities when they asked it to take care of business in two distinct CV market segments. Every other major van maker shares responsibility for the small and medium sized van categories between two seperate models. Ford have slmp^ elected to produce small and medium-sized versions of the Transit Connect - short wheelbase/low roof and long wheelbase/high-roof (a 5 seatertomeo Connect is also available).


Next up, the contents of the Transit Connect engine bay. Ford empty their DOHC 1.8 Duratec unit as the range's petrol contingent and, with just over 113bhp on tap, on paper Itb got more oomph than the other choices, unfortunately for petrol heads, the Transit Connect Is going to be plying Its trade on tarmac - a'surtace Where paper performance can be misleading. For everyday ilse, punchy, economical diesel engines are preferred by seasoned van drivers and Ford have a real cracker,-, in their Duratorq 1.8 TDCI. With 220 Nm of torque on offer at just 1700rpm tills 89bhp poweiplant eclipses the petrol’s 160Nm at 4400rpm. As well as useful low-end performance, the TDCI manages to return 37mpg on the conbined cycle. A figure thafs only marginally Inferior to the second diesel option - a 74bhp 1.8 litre TDdl engine that produces the Connect's best combined economy with almost 39mpg.


As a whole, the Transit Connect Is a good-looking, well rounded package with warranty cover galore and long service Intervals. The other small van producers have had It too easy for too long: now it seems the Transit Connect has turned up to Join the party.
