Eighth wonder John Car crown - again

claims World Stock i

RIMINGTON racer John Lund

has been crowned the World Stock Car champion—for the eighth time! The 48-year-old farmer, of Wood-

farm, Rimington, stormedto victory in the race which he first won in 1987.

Thirty-four cars took part in the

world final which was held in Coven try. After much manoeuvring in the 25-lap race, John finished ahead of the pile by more than half-a-lap. The event, which featured 12 dri

vers from foreign shores, saw John qualify for the final after the semi-

- final stage on the second row of the starting grid.

" _ He didn’t get off to the best of

starts as he dropped down to sixth but'by the sixth lap, he had managed

to move up to third. The local racerv took over at the head of the field at around the half-way stage and never, relinquished his position. : John said: “Obviously, I am very

proud to have won it. I am still get ting over the shock of winning it for the eighth time.”

' ' John first began racing in 1976 and is now considered to be one of the vet-. erans of the car stock circuit. /

He added: “I am probably one of the more experienced drivers out

there. “All the cars are self-built. I quite

like the building of the cars and the set-up of the cars. A lot goes into the

car set-up.” Indeed, much of John’s success can

THE Bill Almon Memorial Trophy, was contested at Mytton Fold Golf Club on Sunday.

Theevent, sponsored by Bill s wife, . •

Anne, was heavily supported by all sec tions of the club as a mark of respect to the late Bill who is so fondly remembered by many golfers and whose untimely and sudden death distressed so many people. It was fitting that the event, played in

glorious sunshine, produced several prizewinners who were particularly close to Bill - none more so than Anne who won the first ladies’ prize.

The overall winner was Neil Osliffe with ; .

41 stableford points. Division One prizes were won by Roger

Altham (37) and Simon Pilbin (37). Peter Tomlinson (39) beat Frank Hin-

recently contested to raise money for the appeal. Thyt went to Ian Thomson, Mick Townsend, Pauline White and Carol Cherry.
