What about other brutal and unde

, . Thirdly, it has little to do with break ing TJN.'resblutions. Other countries are

‘the USA will never attack Israel, v ' No) it haseverything to do with, first
ly,' o il. Ifaq has the second highest reserves' in the world. They are needed to fuel US consumption of 20m barrels a day. Tibet, East Timor and Rwanda could not satisfy this consumption, so the USA did not intervene. Secondly, it
has everything to do with Full Spectrum Dominance, the creed of Bush's inner circle; sole and unilateral domination of the world, a creed which promotes American interests and American inter-

deflecting attention from American domestic problems and the November elections.. It may also have to do with unfinished family business.
-' Any attack would be illegal. The US and Britain have ratified the UN and NATO charters. Neither allows either pre-emptive strikes or regime change.

A TOP football club physio and a scary skeleton have been called in to help prevent th e children of the Kibble Valley from making a rod for their own backs. The Blackburn Rovers official,is. helping Blackburn, Hyndburn and

them that the way they.hehave now will have a marked effect on the health of their backs in future years.
. This is in an attempt to persuade ' ]
Trust spokesman Mrs Janice Atkin son, said: "There is a big problem.and ,
we are trying to catch i t early. Back problems are caused by things like chil dren'carrying heavy satchels lop-sided over their shoulders or the girls wear
ing high heels." . By 14, half of all children will have
experienced some hack discomfort and, by the time they reach adulthood, 2.5 million of them will have hack pain ■ every single day. A trust physiotherapist talked and
used the skeleton to demonstrate to primary school pupils to mark Nation
al Back Pain',Week, beginning at Brookside County Primary; School, Clitheroe.
The children were invited to take • “ "
part in a competition which will be judged by the Rovers physio, and a Blackburn player will present the
prizes. In our picture, Brookside School
pupil Bethany Harrison and her class mates listen to Clitheroe Physiothera py Centre senior physiotherapist Jane Whitaker as she emphasises the prob lems that can he caused by carrying heavy backpacks. (C151002/10)
Signup to sing a fine song;
A DECISION has been taken to expand the size , of the A Cappella Singers and, as a result, there are several vacancies. ■ : In order to improve the
overall quality, the group needs two altos, two tenors and, possibly, a soprano. It is essential that any Ribble Valley residents wishing to join the A Cappella Singers should be able to blend in with the- rest of the group. Ideally, they should be able to read music to a reasonable standard, hut anyone currently singing in a choir will he aware of this requirement. The group is well respected as a member of the National Federation of Music Societies. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings in the Wilpshire area of Blackburn. . Plans are. now .well
advanced for the Christ mas Concert in Decem ber and a concert to take place in April in aid of the Air Ambulance. But free, dates are still avail
able for late springliincl. the remainder of 2003.'.
Musical Director
Chris Gill will be leaving the group at the end of the year, so this has also created a new vacancy
. that wijl need to be filled early m the new year.;. Further details can be obtained from chairman-

/. . Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi chil
dren have died as a direct result of the Gulf War and sanctions. Afghhanistan lies in ruins (and is unstable). There are
still forces in -the Balkans. The cost of repairing these last two areas may exceed $20 billion. The al-Qaida net
work is still terrorising. Yet some want to engage in more destructive violence. Surely, history shows us that violence never makes the world a better place, it merely breeds more violence, maybe not immediately, but always eventually ,

A SPINNER from Blackburn, suffer ing from consumption, was ordered by • his doctor to go to California for his health. "I can't afford," he told the doc tor. "Then go to Clitheroe," came the gruff retort. The sick man did so and recovered. . • The truth of the statement was con
firmed when Medical Officer to the Coiiricil, speaking on local longevity at a Bowland Council dinner; claimed that we live in not only the prettiest but the healthiest valley in England.
□ A question was asked about the
planned construction of a light railway between Blackburn, Accrington, Bum- ley and Clitheroe, as twelve months had elapsed since the proposal for the scheme had received assent from the Board of Trade.
■ - O The old October cattle, horse and sheep fair was held in the streets of the i town- The attendance of dealers and buyers was much larger than usual and '
the show was a large one. The chief characteristic of this fair was its grow ing importance as a Shire foal sale.
THE Princess Royal passed almost unnoticed through Clitheroe district. She
was.returning to Harewood Hall from an official engagement, the ser vice of reconsecration of Liverpool Parish Church, which had been rebuilt after bombing during the Second World War. Some villagers recognised; her, as she frequently visited Waddow Hall Girl Guiders' Traing Centre and ;she returned their cheery waves. .
□ Memories of a pioneer motor car
industry were revived when an enthu siast from Vermont, USA contacted the Town Clerk. The writer needed spare parts for his L.M. car, built in Clitheroe by the Midland Light Car Company Ltd. The Castle Street works, closed some 40 years before, had made bicycles prior to car manufacture and both-were described as very ser viceable.
□ At a town council meeting, a Con
servative Party proposal to form a committee to enquire into the sale of council houses was defeated by; a majority vote. Conservative council lors said the matter should be investi gated further as a large number of councillors owned their homes and it was quite illogical to deny this to coun cil house tenants.
BETTER facilities were requested at Ribhlesdale Pool for youngsters to park their bicycles. The bikes were being vandalised and parts'stolen as they had to be left in the racks at the rear of the pool building and were out of general view.

• □ Lancashire County Council •decided to abandon a large-scale cam-
, paign to halt the ravages of Dutch elm ^ disease. The Ribble Valley Parks .'Superintendent said that it would mean a drastic reduction in the num ber of elms, probably more than 10,000 trees over the following 10 years. ■
