A TEAM of sharp-shooters from Stonyhurst College lived up to the col lege's military tradition in an Army Cadet Force exercise on the Isle of Man.
: ‘Gome and fight’ taunts
A CHALLENGE to fight in Lowergate led to a Clitheroe man appearing before magistrates. In court at'Blackburn, the prosecution
withdrew a charge of being drunk and disor derly against Rory Anderson Harris (28), of Hall Street, Clitheroe. He'agreed to be bound over in the sum of £60 for six months.
For Harris, Miss Sarah Perkins said other
people had been aggressive and abusive towards him arid he reacted.
Against strong competition, the pupils
won Exercise Manx Clanger, beating seven other teams from colleges in th e .N o rth West and one from the Isle of Man Army
Cadet Force. Tests included swimming, shooting, obser
vation, first aid and command tasks over two days.
By the end of the first day, the Ribble Val . '.
ley squad — most of whom are from areas near the school - was in second place. I t had won maximum points in shooting and done well in swimming, command tasks and first aid. But the young "soldiers" knew the compe
tition was still wide open as the following day offered a gruelling navigation test on Snaefell mountain, carrying a large number of points. - - So they hatched a plan. The aim of the task was for teams to obtain points by finding "let ter boxes" and stamping their cards. The Stonyhurst group worked out a strategy by which’the boys formed one team with the
objective of heading for the three hard-to- obtain distant checkpoints, which carried bonus points.: , -, , .
The.girls made up the 'B’ team and set off ,
to gain as many : points as possible around the summit of the mountain. The plan helped the school win the exercise with 1,628 points,, ahead of the Merchant Taylor’s College Cadet Force, second on 1,428 points. The team members, Matthew Howarth
and Jessica Macfarlane, both from Hurst Green, Eric Tsoi, Hong Kong, Edmund Page, Cirencester, Benadette Grayston, Longridge, and Karla Slack, Preston, received their prizes from Mr Richard Cornhill, the Chief
Executive of the Isle of Man. ' "What'was outstanding over the whole
event was the teamwork within the group, th e . use of the team members’ strengths and the
’ encouragement of each other," said Lt. David Channing, of the-Stonyhurst College Com bined Cadet Force.

Head sla A-level fi leavers’ e
••-. • j ^ ;; by Tim Procter F
A COMBINATION, i of individual achieve- t ments and collective A performance resulted/ * in . this year's leavers at f St Augustine's RC v High School, Billing- f ton, breaking all t records.
a T h is was despite th e 1
"fmancial discrimination" ’ which faces such schools ,]
- due to Government poli- ! cy, said headmaster Mr ( Anthony McNamara a t ( th e annual celebration evening. •
.• . ] He slammed "an educa- j
tion system which many of \ us sense may be losing its . coherence" and declared: . "The fiasco over the A-level marking is another symp- ; tom." But there was plenty to
be optimistic about at St Augustine's and the head- , master complimented the leavers, saying that every one could take pride in what had been achieved. He told them: "You have earned your success - keep on working hard and aim as high as you possibly can, knock loudly on the doors of opportunity and don't be put off or undermined by anybody. "Remember your roots!
Be proud of who you'are and where you came from. ’.'Keep in touch and keep
the faith!" Some 72 per cent of
GCSE entrants obtained five or more top grades, but Mr McNamara empha sised also the success of
it could be reality!
