A BALL for East Lancs Hos pice fund-raisers has raised £3,000 - for East Lancs Hos pice.- The black tie evening, held at

Stirk House Hotel, Gisburn, was the second annual ball for the fund-raising committee and guests and, although the num ber attending was lower than expected, it proved to be a suc cessful and enjoyable event. The ball was organised by

fund administrator Mrs Alison Gladwin and fund- raiser Mr

valuables, including dinner for, four a t Northcote Manor, a case of wine from Byrnes an d . signed footballs from the Blackburn Rovers and Burnley teams. Vince Earle entertained the

93 guests with a 50-minute comedy routine that Mr Geoff Braithwaite, chairman of the

hospice fund-raising commit tee, described as excellent. He said: "I t was proof th a t foul language is not necessary for a good comedy act. There was not one swear word the whole time and he had everyone in stitches." After the stand-up humour,

Vince brought out his band and played music from the ’60s and '70s, which started the dancing. This was followed by a disco. During the evening, Mr

Peter Robinson, chief executive of Blackburn Partnership, pre-

' sented a cheque for £1,500 to Mr Braithwaite for the hospice.

Poor weather failed to deter ramblers from

D ES P ITE a poor weather forecast, 14 members of Clitheroe Ramblers' Associa tion started a walk from Dol-, phinholme on Sunday. The, history of the area was;

soon evident as, emerging from woods at the edge of the village, a double chimney which was part of the old gas works was spotted. The walkers went pa s t

Wy reside Hall, over Wagon Road and fields to Tinker Lane and on to Stonehead. After a short road walk, the group tu rn ed on to Waste Lane, an old tra ck , before eventually reaching the open fellside of Harrisend Fell. There lunch was enjoyed, shel

tered from the bitter,'easterly wind and with good views over Morecambe Bay to the Lake District hills. ' • , Several birds were spotted,

including fieldfare and red- legged partridge in a nearby pen, identified by one group member. .From the fellside, the walk wound its way. down to th e Wyreside Lakes which have been created for fishing following the removal of gravel

for construction purposes. Many water birds, including

several great crested grebe, were seen fishing on the lakes before the group completed the walk via Coreless Mill and Mill Wood, ]ust before the rain arrived.
