makeover and as usual, that means restyled headlamps and a curvier front bumper. If you want'it in more detail, the upper and lower grilles are now honeycombed and the head­ lights have clear lenses which house a four-cir­ cle lamp system. Moving to the back, the tail lights on the hatchback are also a good deal more interesting than the outgoing car, with overlapping circles much like,the Primera. Likewise, the 15 in. wheels sported by most ' Almeras get Primera-style wheel trims, while- upspec models get 16 in. alloys. The family link with the Almera’s bigger

brother is a little more tenuous once you move indoors. I t was here that the Primera broke new ground with its N-FORM centre console and although Nissans claim to have adapted the Almera to accommodate the system, much of the visual drama has been removed. Indeed, the entry-level version continues with the same set of knobs and buttons as before. Whereas the Primera features a horizontal shelf tha t juts out from the centre console atop which are the N-FORM controls, the Almera merely installs said controls in the vertical slot where the old knobs and buttons were. Still, i t looks a good deal neater and works a treat.

The 1.8- litre power plant now does a convincing imi­ tation of that found in a Primera, replicating its 118 b.h.p. output. the right direction too - downwards. The old 90 b.h.p. 1.5 S three-door hatchback retailed for £10,350, whereas the latest 98 b.h.p. ver­ sion is available for just £9,995. Likewise, the 113 b.h.p. 1.8-litre SE five door was £12,650, but has been replaced by a more powerful 118 b.h.p. version priced at £12,050. That would be an interesting deal even if you did not know th a t the latest car adds rear parking sensors and electronic climate control. Which you do now. The S specification model that off the range is available in both three- d o o r , four-door and five-door, variants,.either
