well at the pumps, with the diesel returning a combined figure of near ly 40 m.p.g., helped in no small part by a drag coefficient of only 0.32, astounding for such a bluff-fronted, slab-sided vehicle. With that sub- .
£10,000 list price, the Doblo 1.9D certainly represents a cost effec tive and modem way to haul the family about in something less than lim ousine levels of comfort. Nevertheless, the
Doblo includes some thoughtful touches, such as front and side airbags, pop-up roof rails and a swivel-open ing roof hatch, two big sliding side doors and a cargo shelf above the windscreen. The seats are
trimmed in a suitably hardwearing fabric for . transporting young fam ilies about and all sur faces are made of sturdy materials which are intensely practical. As well as the high-
level shelf, numerous “cubbies” dot the interi or, including some gen uinely vast door bins. Fiat has obviously
given the Doblo interior some serious considera tion, and in this instance it is refreshing that cheap and ill-con ceived do not necessari ly go hand in hand. To be quite blunt, the

powered sports coupes in Europe for some time, but it is only recently that such cars have begun to appear in Britain. Mercedes set the ball
DIESEL DELIGHT T

HEY have had afford able diesel-
rolling with a diesel version of its C-elass Sports Coupe, encour aging Peugeot to follow suit with the 406 Coupe HDi featured here. Under the bonnet lies
the French company’s latest 2.2-litre common rail turbo-diesel unit, developing some 136 b.h.p. That is good enough
to see 60 m.p.h. in around 10 seconds on the way to 129 m.p.h., almost identical figures to those of the 2.0-litre petrol model. Which brings us to a
couple of problems fac ing this particular model, both of which have to do with price. First, given that the
Coupe HDi costs either £22,295 or £24,995 (depending on whether you choose S or SE spec ification), you are look ing at a £2,300 premium over the 2.0-litre petrol variant. That might not mat
ter if this car was a saloon or an estate, both of which are often bought to cover high
i p ___
mileages. But coupes do not tend to he used as much and, therefore, will take much longer to justify the price premi um with fuel savings. These, incidentally,
amount to around 10 miles on each extra gal lon. Expect to average around 40 m.p.g. Problem two has to do
with the opposition: in fact, there is only one competitor, the afore mentioned Mercedes C220 CDI Sports Coupe, a car that, at £22,825, costs very little more than the Peugeot. I t is as well to get
these two issues out of the way before consider ing the 406 Coupe HDi on its real merits, for on this basis there really is not very much wrong withit. To our eyes, it is still

styled by the Pininfari- na design studio in Italy, which is headed by Lorenzo Ramciotti, the . man already responsible for the Ferrari 456 and 550 Maranello. Certainly, hehas
brought the same tech niques to hear with this Peugeot. Take the front of the car, compared by its makers to “the prow of some fantastical ship, with the majestic bon net, sleek as a propeller blade and the shark’s mouth flanked by two elliptical headlights.” I t is not, as Peugeot is
at pains to point out, intended to he a sporty Coupe. Instead, it is
described as a car that you could enjoy “even when wearing a nice pair of shoes.” If this curious
description is meant to
, imply that the 406 Coupe belongs to the school of softly-sprung Grand Tourers inhabit ed by cars like the Volvo C70, then it is down right wrong. No, behind the wheel
you will not mistake this Peugeot for a Fiat Coupe Turbo or an Alfa Romeo GTV, but nor will the road-going expe rience on offer discour age you from steering the thing with the seat of your pants if you really want to.
As far as steering is
concerned, the conven tional system in the HDi is preferable to the rather vague speed-sen sitive arrangemeht • offered on the flagship petrol 3.0-litre V6. The suspension used is
a retuned version of that found in the 406 saloon, so it is no surprise to find that the ride and han dling mix is superb. The springs and
. dampers have also been uprated over those of the 406 saloon, in keep ing with the Coupe’s higher station in life, and powerful braking is assured, thanks to ABS strengthened by four- piston Bremho callipers.
Senseand sensibility

being sensible is not all it is cracked up to be and 626 sales in Britain have fallen in recent . years. ■ The importers will shortly be doing something about that with the introduction of an all-new model, the Mazda 6. While we are waiting for that

to arrive, however, the appeal of the 626 has been given a boost. Or so Mazda hopes. What was previously an all-
encompassing range has been slimmed down to just three models and four engine choices. No more base-level LXi variants or questionably-named Sport models. You can still have an estate
rather than the standard five- door hatchback, but only in a single GXi SE trim level. Prices now range between
£12,995 and £15,995, so it is still smack in Mondeo/Vectra/Lagu- na/Peugeot 406 territory. The new entry-level 109
b.h.p. 1.8-litre petrol GXi five- door model is the only one not to have a 2.0-litre engine. Above it lie the GXi SE and
GSi SE variants the dealers are currently putting their weight . behind, the SE (Special Equip-
ment) designation meant to indicate “substantial specifica tion increases”. These are certainly neces
sary, sinceinlhe case of the GXi prices have risen by £500 over the previous non-SE-desig- nated models. We will be chari table and say that perhaps this is simply to give dealers more negotiating room. So, go for the GXi SE variants
(as you will have to if you want an estate). They start at £13,995 and the highlight features include front fog lamps, I5in. alloy wheels, climate control, a single CD player and a leather steering wheel. There is a choice of 115 b.h.p.
um to pay for cither a diesel or an estate (or £2,000 if you want both). If you stick with petrol power,
AZDA’S 626 has always been a sensi ble buy. But then

2000 revamps: this remains one of the quietest cars in the class. One nice touch is the hard-
you also get a darkly-trimmed interior and seat trim combina tion, along with a carbon-look panel, white dials and black headlamp bezels. Opt for the sportier 136 b.h.p. petrol GSi hatchback (£14,495) and you also get cruise control and a rear spoiler. On the road, the steering is
