Musical treat heralds a return of a native

WHEN the Clare MacFarlane String Quartet played for the Clitheroe Concerts Society, it was a welcome return for one of the town’s most distinguished natives. The other members of the quartet (Julia Hanson,

violin, Richard Williamson, viola, and Christopher Hoyle, cello) have equally sparkling credentials, and their performance was a delight. Each of the four instruments spoke with a distinct voice, and much of the evening’s music had the character of a stimulating conversation between friends with plenty to discuss. The contrapuntal textures of Mozart’s Quartet in D (K499) gained from this diversity of timbre, as the inner voices of second violin and viola could be dis tinguished. as readily as the outside parts which so often monopolise the listener’s attention. As the programme sampled the next two genera

tions of string quartet writing, with Mendelssohn’s E minor quartet of 1837 and Brahms’ A minor work of 1873, the musical textures became more complex. Mendelssohn shared Mozart’s love of counter

point, but he also provides many opportunities for the players to spread their lyrical wings, which they did with obvious pleasure. Brahms often takes pains to throw his back

STEPBEN ROBINSON Starry, starry night; Royton Assembly Hall, Oldham; Jan 27th

CHILDREN aged from eight to as young as three are considered suitable to be in the audience for a production coming to Royton Assembly Hall, Old ham, on January 27th. "Starry, starry night" is a play from one of the

country's leading young people's theatre companies. Pop-up Theatre has a name for tackling a variety

of important issues in children's lives and present ing them in a way which is relevant to adults and children alike. In "Starry starry night" Millie finds herself in a

world where toys are huge - or has she become small? The play is written by Michael Dalton, whose.

most recent play for this age group, "Snow Shoes” was received with acclaim. The play is accompanied by music from Ransom Notes, an innovative duo.

top" Perkins is still going strong at the age of 93 and will be the main attrac tion at this year's Burnley Blues Festival. Pinetop is widely recog

nized as the world's best blues piano player and one of the last great Mis sissippi bluesmen. He cre ated a style of playing that has influenced three generations of piano play ers and will continue to be the yardstick by which blues pianists are mea sured. Bom in Belzoni, Mis

sissippi, in 1913, Pinetop started out playing guitar a t house parties and honky tonks. He came under the tutelage of Clarence "Pinetop" Smith, for whom he com posed a tune entitled

"Pinetop's Boogie" which later became a hit record. When Perkins started per forming that tune pub licly, he adopted the name Pinetop for himself. An arm injury forced him to switch from guitar to piano. He is, perhaps, best

known for his work with Muddy Waters. The Burnley festival is
