HEY have had afford able diesel- powered sports

coupes in Europe for some time, but it is only recently that such cars have begun to appear in Britain. Mercedes set the ball

rolling with a diesel version of its C-class Sports Coupe, encour aging Peugeot to follow suit with the 406 Coupe HDi featured here. Under the bonnet lies

the French company’s latest 2.2-litre common rail turbo-diesel unit, developing some 136 b.h.p. That is good enough

to see 60 m.p.h. in around 10 seconds on the way to 129 m.p.h., almost identical figures to those of the 2.0-litre petrol model. Which brings us to a

couple of problems fac ing this particular model, both of which have to do with price. First, given that the

Coupe HDi costs either £22,295 or £24,995 (depending on whether you choose S or SE spec ification), you are look ing at a £2,300 premium over the 2.0-litre petrol variant. That might not mat

ter if this car was a saloon or an estate, both of which are often bought to cover high
