Died a year after drinking caustic
soda in bathroom Coroner could not be satisfied th a t woman intended to take her life
A GRINDLETON woman told her husband she was not sure why she had drunk from a bottle of caustic soda in their bath
room. Speaking from her hospital bed she told him: "Everything was a big black
fog." An inquest held in the council
chamber a t Clitheroe heard how Mrs Kathleen Halliwell (43), of Bank Hall Cottages, Grindleton, died in hospital in Blackburn more than a year after drinking the caustic soda. She had spent 13 months in hospital

was prescribed Prozac by her doctor. His wife continued a circle of drink
and medication, said Mr Halliwell, who added: "She saw a number of doctors and psychiatrists and all they seemed to do was prescribe more medication." He said the drugs led to her losing
her job as a groom and they were both unemployed when they moved to Grindleton, with her mental health deteriorating. She had taken drug overdoses and cut her wrists on several
occasions. Mr Halliwell said things were so bad
he moved into a caravan outside then- home.
