O p e ra t io n s s c a n d a l —M P THE rise in the number
of patients having oper ations cancelled at the
last minute has been branded "appalling" by Ribble Valley MP Nigel
Evans. He was angry after
receiving figures from the local health authori ties, which showed only 52 cancellations for non- clinical reasons in
1997/1998 when the Government first came to power hut 200 for 2001/2002. Said Mr Evans, who
has written to health authorities demanding action: "I am shocked and appalled by the number of cancelled operations. The Govern ment and health trusts
across Lancashire must work hand-in-hand to ensure a better service for the county’s people. There can be few
things more distressing for patients than a last- minute cancelled opera tion and this increase is a shocking statistic that must be remedied as soon as possible."
