Theatrical treat for readers


I LOCAL lovers of good books have celebrated the first anniversary of their literary gatherings. Members of Clitheroe


L ite ra ry Society .were out on the town for din­ ner and theatre after a successful year during which many books were read and discussed a t their monthly meetings. The group saw “Uncle


Vanya”, by Chekhov, at the Library Theatre, Manchester.'Chekhov's short stories had already previously been studied. The society was


formed to encourage .readers from all walks of life and of all ages to join read and discuss books. Titles are diverse, as are topics reviewed, and any member can add a choice to a reading list. The emphasis is on


informal readings and active forum in a relaxed, social environment. Dis­ cussion provokes a wide range of responses and enhances each reader's


I view of the books. The society provides


an ideal chance for book lovers to meet over a cof­ fee, glass of wine or a


meal. Meetings are held on

pitals' NHS Trust, is the daughter of Mr Michael and Mrs Jean Hammond, of Bolton-by-Bowland. Given away by her father, she wore an ivory gown


with sequinned bodice, detailed back and full train. Her bouquet comprised cream roses and lavender. Dame of honour was the bride's friend, Mrs Dee


Heap, and bridesmaids were Hayley Pierce-Jones, Michaela Hammond, the bride's sister, and Abigail


Hammond, the bride’s six-year-old daughter. The adult attendants wore full-length dresses in mid­ night blue satin and Abigail wore an ankle-length dress in cream and gold. All carried bouquets to complement the bride's. Best man was Mr Andrew Clarkson. ' '
