responded to the call as usual and MedAlert "flying doctor" Dr Grant McKeating, called to the scene, was able to use a piece of advanced equip ment that was only due to be officially handed over two days later. Mr Muliammed Mushtaq, of Black

ALL 17 p ar t- tim e retained firemen a t Clitheroe were expected to join their full time colleagues on strike today. , Their action leaves Clitheroe and the Rib

, First for all your Christmas Gfits
EXCLUSIVE by John Turner
A M EM B ER of th e ambulance staff a t Clitheroe has taken a risk iy speaking o ut in support of the c am p a ig n for improved ambu-
ance cover in the Ribble Valley. His revelations, which include
claims th a t the volunteer F irs t Responders are being used to deal, with incidents like pub fights and even calls to health centres and Clitheroe Hospital, are expected to anger his bosses and members of the
Ambulance Trust. . He said he was pleased to see the
recent letters in the Advertiser and Times drawing attention to shortcom
ings in the service. : .; The ambulanceman, one of eight sta
Ko/J4 r-iL ' tioned at Clitheroe, who asked for his
identity to be withheld, wrote: "It’s high time that the people
this.subject con cerns most should know what is going on. As an emergency ambulance person I feel it is my duty to explain to the gen eral public what is going on and how our management is creating the illusion all is well, by maintaining the
ever-.so- important, Government-set Orcon stan
dards. ■ Firstly, I feel that, although they will
have you believe differently, patient care is very low down on the list of priorities of our management. The one and only, priority is response times.. ,. There is only one ambulance some of the’time. This has been going on for
• years. As soon as that vehicle gets a job, ■ the next nearest vehicle is at Altham
near Padiham. Arid that's presuming there is one available there. Altham is the busiest station in East Lancashire.
' Next nearest is Blackburn; Accrington or Bamoldswick.
"It is not uncommon for ambulances
to be mobilised on emergencies from Blackburn to Clitheroe and vice versa or anywhere in Lancashire for that mat ter. You must also bear in mind .that ambulances only have standard Transit engines and are very heavy due to all the equipment. In other words they are slow,"hesaid. .
He said very often, the Clitheroe , '
- vehicle is sent out of town to do routine ■ work in other areas including hospital
transfers. He revealed how response time? are
maintained so well, despite an increased demand of approx-100%-
with.no actual increase in numbers of patient-moving ambulances in the last 10 years; "If ambulances are 'concentrated in areas of high demand, i.e. Blackburn, then areas • of less demand suffer, but statistically,
, this is better for the service. "If an emergency
is.received in an area of lesser demand i.e. Clitheroe,

then should it take over the eight or 19 tninutes for the ambulance to respond, which ever applies to the specific job, then it no longer matters how long it takes because statistically, the job is 'out
of time'." He listed methods used by the ambu
lance service to overcome their prob lems: "The introduction. of Fast Response Cars which are manned by a single- paramedic. Very good for response times; no good for taking peo ple to hospital; You still have to wait for the standard ambulance. "First Responders are well -meaning,
public-minded citizens.who are mis guided into thinking they are serving their friends, families and neighbours,
- by volunteering to attend, day or night, at what are classed as immediately life-,
: threatening emergencies, that require an eight-minute response.
