Every festive season, households throw

NOW is the time to start planninj for Christmas by making a note i
, The above are just some suggestions on 1
THIS year more than 40 million people will finish their festive meal with Christmas pudding, yet few know of its origins or of the customs and superstitions
associated with it. According to research carried
; out by Derbyshire-based Matthew Walker, Britain's largest producers of Christmas puddings, today's tasty dessert began as something completely different. It originated as a 14th Century
"porridge" called frumenty, which. was made by boiling beef and mutton with raisins, currants, prunes, wines and spices. This would often be more like a soup and was eaten as a fasting dish in preparation for the Christmas fes- ■
tivities. By 1595, frumenty was evolv
ing into plum pudding, having been thickened with eggs, bread crumbs and dried fruit, and given more flavour thanks to the addi tion of ale and spirits. Just as it became the custom-,
ary Christmas dessert, along came the Puritans in 1664 and they banned it as a lewd custom describing its rich ingredients as
. unfit for God-fearing people. It was George I who, having
tasted and enjoyed plum pudding, re-established it as part of the Christmas feast in 1714 - despite objections by Quakers, who regarded it as "the invention of the scarlet whore of Babylon". By Victorian times, Christmas
puddings had evolved into some thing which looked similar to the j ones enjoyed today. Over the years, many supersti
tions have surrounded this popu-| Iar festive dessert. It is said pud-j dings should be made by the 45th I Sunday after Trinity with 13 j
