Sports enthusiasts off on a simulated course in novel fund-raising exercise

A TEAM of walkers, rowers and bikers will soon be sweating th e ir way round a simulated

course for charity. The group are members of

the gym a t Roefield Leisure Centre and are raising money for the Christian Lewis Trust. The event was launched by the trust's director, Mr David Walton, with mascot Dillon the Dolphin.

The event, named Go!, is a

simulated walk around the 22 specialist childrens' cancer hospitals in the UK. The sponsored trip will cover an estimated 2000 miles and be "travelled" on the gym's run ning, rowing and cycling machines. As the team "reaches" each

hospital, a card and a photo graph of the team will be sent to the appropriate hospital, saying i t has "arrived". I t is

anticipated that the children will respond by writing their thanks to the gym. The trust was set up in 1989

in Swansea following the death of four-year-old Christ ian Lewis. I t aims to improve the quality of life for children with cancer and for then fam ilies, by providing financial and practical support, holiday breaks, play therapy and trav el insurance. The event started on Fri

day, February 1st and runs until the end of the month, and participants will be rais ing money from their sponsors to provide each hospital ward with a computer with full Internet access. These will enable the children to do the same things their peers do; talk to friends and relatives with e-mail and video links, play computer games with friends who may be miles away and, most importantly,

to continue their education, A raffle and other competi

tions will also be held at Roe- field to add to the funds

raised. For more information about

the event, contact Mr John Leaver on 01200 442188. Our photograph shows Mr

Walton at Roefield, with Dil lon on his right, and some of the team members on the run ning machines. (J290102/5)
