ALTERNATIVE therapies, dismissed only' a few years ago by conventional medical thinking as being in the province of the char latan or the hypochondriac, are now widely accepted as being valuable, although differ ent, additions to the arsenal of weapons used,. to combat ill health. Many of th e proce

dures and remedies are exceedingly ancient. Acupuncture, for exam ple, has a written histo ry d a t in g ba ck over 4,500 years. And the craft of the

herbalist has provided man with his medicines probably since before he climbed down from the trees. There is evidence that many primates use certain leaves and roots to counteract the ills to which they are subject ed. Even dogs and cats eat grass to help when they suffer indigestion. Many unconventional,

remedies involve some form of massage or man ipulation. Reflexology, or zone therapy, is a notable example. The theory is that the body, as a com posite whole, comprises zones, each of which must harmonise if full health is to be achieved. Reflexes in hands and

feet are massaged by the practitioner, who can detect from touching those parts where vari ous problems might lie. Aromatherapy is a combination of massage

Anthony McNamara, Mr Tom linson praises the school for its "outstanding" recent inspection report and for its consistent abili ty to produce excellent examina tion results. '

The praise comes hot on the .

heels of a Sunday Times survey which rated St Augustine's as one of the top five schools in England for "best value" when its academic results were matched against local house prices. Mr McNamara said his col

leagues were delighted that their commitment to pupils had been

recognised in this way. He said: "We set out to give all

the children who comS to us, from those with learning difficulties to

standing' quality of our relation ships and extra-curricular provi sion meant every bit as much to us as did the accolades for our academic success." Although the number of pupils

on the St Augustine’s roll keeps on climbing, the school continues to be over-subscribed. Mr McNamara added: "Nearly

all the children who come to us are well-mannered and want to succeed. Their parents support

those who are intellectually, very the school's approach to discipline gifted, the richest, most enjoyable and value what we have to offer, experience of secondary education When everybody pulls together in we possibly can. Increased car parking charges will help pay for CCTV coverage

MOTORISTS using Clitheroe c a r p a rk s to be covered by CCTV will be paying ab o u t £28,000 a year towards the sys

tem's monitoring costs. As previously reported, the ruling

Conservative group on Ribble Val ley Borough Council has decided to increase charges on the Railway View, Lowergate, Market, Chester Avenue and Edisford car parks. The increases should raise this

amount of money. The Conservatives voted though

the increases at a meeting of the Poli cy and Finance Committee.

Liberal members made their opposi

tion clear - "there will be a dispropor tionate burden placed on motorists," declared Coun. Howel Jones (Clitheroe) saying that all council tax payers should share the cost. He emphasised that the party was

not against the cameras themselves, as had been suggested in a recent letter to this newspaper. Liberal colleague Coun. Frank

Dyson (Clitheroe) said he could not help feeling a little aggrieved that his request to officials for up-to-date car park revenue figures had not been met. Chief Executive Mr David Morris

said he could only apologise that the figures had not been made available.

Valley MP is to conduct survey on county’s ‘biggest rat run’

AN MP is to conduct his own traffic survey on a road through Simonstone that has been described as the "biggest rat run in Lancashire." Ribble Valley MP Mr Nigel Evans

will visit Simonstone Lane next month to see for himself first hand the prob lems tha t residents are experiencing with speeding vehicles. He will be accompanied by mem

bers of the Simonstone Lane Resi dents Action Group, which has been campaigning for months for traffic-

calming measures. Frustrated by the lack of action from Lancashire County Council, action group members have sent a three-page letter of complaint calling for immediate action to Coun ty Coun. Mrs Nora Ward, the county council's Cabinet portfolio holder for roads and transportation. If it fails to-bring action a public
