Aylward wrote to parents pointing out how easy it was to “seriously misrepre sent, distort or sensation alise" things that happened
in schools. This week the Depart
ment of Education team which supervises indepen-
cashire Social Services has conducted a thorough
investigation. "There is no evidence
which suggests that the school is failing in its duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of its boarders. The school will continue
to be monitored, but only under the normal proce dures relating to indepen
dent schools. Everyone at Stonyhurst
College is keen to move for ward following two years of allegations of various sorts, some going back decades. Observers
feel.that with hundreds of pupils on the

social and religious change, pressures of various sorts will inevitably arise. After a blip in general interest in boarding educa
tion, numbers are going up, though the s chool has increasing importance for
day pupils. Many attend
